Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Product Engineering, the Materials Engineer is responsible for the development and testing of new products, the development of associated manufacturing processes for those products, and the improvement of products and processes related to existing products. Product improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing product yields and overall manufacturing efficiencies are key elements of this role. A deep understanding of manufacturing processes, along with the ability to revise and modify these processes while maintaining product performance requirements, is essential for success in improving efficiency and yields. The Materials Engineer will primarily focus on developing products, components, and processes related to Heim self-lubricating liner products and tribological coatings, where materials knowledge is critical. Additional responsibilities include transitioning new technology into repeatable and consistent manufacturing processes.

Strong communication skills with cross-functional teams, clear project objectives and timelines, and expediting product delivery to stakeholders are vital for success. The Materials Engineer will collaborate across functions to ensure timely coordination and communication, identify, prioritize, and efficiently execute product development and improvement initiatives aligned with company goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are essential for leading Heim’s product development and improvement activities focused on self-lubricated liners, surfaces, finishes, and tribology:

  • Collaborate with the corporate New Products and Processes team to develop new liner systems and technologies for Heim products.
  • Incorporate new technologies into Heim’s product line and test their performance against relevant requirements.
  • Transition new technologies into Heim products and manufacturing by standardizing and optimizing processes for efficiency and repeatability.
  • Implement process improvements on existing self-lubricated product lines to optimize processes for increased yields and operational efficiencies.
  • Evaluate manufacturing capabilities and align processes for repeatability and consistency.
  • Support new and existing RBC/Heim special processes.
  • Perform analytical analyses of existing and new products and processes.
  • Collaborate across divisions within RBC as the Heim SME on self-lubricated products to share best practices.
  • Develop detailed project plans for product development and estimate costs.
  • Manage product development projects, monitor milestones, and ensure timely, within-budget delivery.
  • Develop and execute rigorous test plans for product qualification, document results, and recommend design modifications for performance improvements.
  • Lead research and trade studies to determine optimal design options that meet customer requirements and company goals for growth and efficiency.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master’s or PhD in Chemical or Materials Engineering or related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in self-lubricated bearings or related fields.
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to prepare and present technical information clearly.
  • Experience with manufacturing or development of products utilizing thermosetting resins, thermoplastics, or elastomers.
  • Experience with manufacturing and testing of composite systems and components.
  • Knowledge of plating principles and practices.
  • Understanding of organic material properties and classification.
  • Proficiency in analytical chemistry techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, and Rheometry.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10-15% for customer, supplier, and RBC facility visits.
