Job summary

POSITION SUMMARY:The Materials Specialistserves as the operational backbone of Thruway’s business, playing a critical role in both warehouse operations and quality assurance activities. Key responsibilities include receiving, picking, packing, kitting, shipping, and cycle counting inventory while maintaining accuracy, organization, and safety throughout warehouse processes. In support of the Quality Department, the Materials Specialistperforms inspections and verification activities to ensure products conform to customer drawings, specifications, and applicable industry standards. Through a strong attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence, this role helps drive customer satisfaction, product quality, and on-time delivery performance.

This individual has responsibility and authority to carry out assigned tasks

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Approximately 60% of Week – Warehouse Responsibilities

  • Receiving: Complete a visual review of incoming items to ensure the correct part was received, quantity is correct, and there is no damage or other concerns. Receive products into the inventory system (Oracle NetSuite).
  • Order Picking: Locate product in warehouse using picking ticket. Efficiently pick customer orders, ensuring that the product is the correct and the quantity needed is verified.
  • Packing Orders: Ensure the items that picked are correct and the quantity is correct. Package to customers’ requirements. Label as required by customer.
  • Shipping: Package shipments according to the customer’s requirements. Coordinate with shipping companies to meet customer’s request. Set up delivery schedule for in-house deliveries.
  • Conduct physical inventories (cycle counts) as required.
  • Conduct forklift and van/box truck inspections and preventative maintenance as required.
  • Maintains 6S (Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Safety, Sustain) principals to enhance cleanliness and organization in all areas.

Approximately 40% of Week – Quality Responsibilities

  • Conduct incoming inspection on items requiring quality inspection.
  • Conduct outgoing inspection on items or orders requiring quality inspection.
  • Prepare and submit accurate quality documentation to customers (e.g., MTRs, CoCs, FAIs, ISIRs, PPAPs).
  • Act as the point person between customer and Thruway ‘s supply chain on branch quality issues.
  • Escalate major quality issues to the CQM and GM for awareness and support.
  • Maintain calibrated and reference only equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

TRAVEL:The majority of the time will be spent onsite at the Thruway distribution facility. Occasional work at other Thruway facilities or customer locations may be required.
