Collins Aerospace in Cheshire, CT is seeking a Metallurgist to perform analytical testing and support failure analyses for multiple product lines. You will work with Quality, Manufacturing and Engineering to resolve issues from suppliers to customers and support material qualification/validation efforts.

The role emphasizes metals knowledge, interpretation of specifications, and hands-on metallurgical testing in a manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of microstructural and physical properties of metals; ability to read material specs.

Responsibilities

Our products are critical to many commercial and military applications. We have an opportunity in our Materials and Process Lab for a Metallurgist at our Cheshire Connecticut facility. Materials and Processes is a service group and a Center of Excellence for Collins Aerospace, Mission Systems and as such requires interaction with the various internal customers, other Collins facilities (for whom we regularly perform failure analyses), customers and suppliers. Summary reports, test results and conclusions for root cause corrective actions are commonly written and presented following failure analysis, material or process changes, and material substitutions. What YOU WILL Do:

• Perform analytical testing including micro-sectioning, microstructural identification, SEM/EDS, XRF, XRay, tensile and compression testing, digital imaging microscopy, and micro-hardness testing, wet chemistry, GC/MS, FTIR, DSC, DMA, to support failure analyses and root cause investigations.
• Support qualification/validation efforts for material and/or supplier obsolescence.
• Support product design and performance involving daily production of numerous product lines.
• Work with Quality, Manufacturing and Engineering to solve manufacturing issues from suppliers through customers.
• Apply product/process design knowledge to troubleshooting and RCCA endeavors.
• Provide support in new product introductions, transitions and conversions.
• Produce the required reports, procedures and supporting documentation to capture solutions and provide engineering guidance.
• Develop and support tooling, equipment and materials selections for existing and new products.

Qualifications You Must Have:

• Experience in a manufacturing environment, supporting material failure analysis and root cause / corrective action
• Experience with metallurgical analysis, knowledge of microstructural and physical properties of metals, reading and interpreting material specifications undefined
• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
• Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent resident.

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy or Material Science with a concentration in Metallurgy
• Experience in failure analysis and root cause / corrective action
• Experience with any of the aforementioned analytical equipment
