Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Material Processes Technician 2 or 3 to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

Job Responsibilities

The Mechanical M&P Laboratories section is seeking a passionate, dedicated individual to join our team as a lab technician who will be responsible for performing a range of tasks to meet our customer needs. Candidates will support multiple laboratories within the section including Composites, Material Acceptance Testing, and Mechanical Tests, and tasking may include coupon and part builds, material testing, and providing technical insight and solutions to our customers. Candidates should have strong foundational knowledge of a range of materials including composites, chemicals, and adhesives, and be able to perform hands-on builds and testing of materials. Candidates should be capable of evaluating new processes in conformance with engineering specifications, thoroughly documenting processes and results, and generating comprehensive reports. Candidates may also aid in the design of experiments and advise operators and engineers regarding processes, procedures, and lab equipment. Finally, Candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). A Candidate who is solution-oriented, a quick learner, passionate about meeting customer needs, and adaptable will be well-suited for this position.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications (Level 2)

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) plus 2 years or more of relevant work experience
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Must be able to read and execute test plans, process specifications and/or work instructions
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn basic manufacturing shop tools (measuring, sanding, cutting, surface preparation, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Basic Qualifications (Level 3)

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) plus 4 years or more of relevant work experience
  • Ability to differentiate between thermoplastic and thermoset material characteristics
  • Advise operators and inform engineers regarding processes, procedures and lab equipment
  • Engineer and development of customized tooling for lab processes
  • Must be able to follow test plans, process specifications, and/or work instructions
  • Layup experience with various degree orientations, knowledge of warp and fill directions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Acid digestions, percent flow, ply orientation, specific gravity and volatiles
  • Bagging processes for curing astroquartz, fiberglass, prepregs, film and paste adhesives
  • Knowledge of industry standards (i.e. ASTMs) and engineering drawings
  • Machining Experience: band saw, belt sander, drill press, lathe, mill, surface grinder
  • Surface Preparation: Acid etching, grit blasting, hand sanding, masking and bonding of test coupons
  • Test Coupon Cutting: compression, dog bone, flatwise, flexural, lap shears and tensile coupons

Salary Range: $50,000.00 - $83,300.00Salary Range 2: $59,300.00 - $98,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
