Position Summary:

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. as a Material Handler I and be a part of an exceptionally dedicated team! In this role, you will handle biological specimens, ensuring flawless storage and shipment for our world-class clients. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Material Handler I, you will:

  • Prepare samples or clinical agents for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments.
  • Work with managers to address customer inquiries, discrepancies, and maintain inventory accuracy.
  • Apply an inventory management system for data entry, sample tracking, and overall sample management.
  • Maintain files to validate data, review for accuracy, and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Perform internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects under the mentorship of a Lead Operations Technician.

- Receive, handle, and inventory specimens of human, animal, and/or plant origin at temperatures from ambient to -196°C.

  • Ensure strict compliance with cGMP parts 210 and 211 and adhere to company quality systems.
  • Follow SOPs, facility safety protocols, and FDA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate behavior aligned with our core values: Integrity, Intensity, Innovation & Involvement.
  • Prepare sample collection kits as per Standard Work Instructions.
  • Make deliveries to clients as required.
  • Travel to other facilities to meet business needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Minimum Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Expert ability to prepare reports using Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, and possibly Microsoft Access.
Education/ Experience:
  • High School Diploma or relevant work experience.
  • Experience with data entry, shipping/receiving, and sample management is preferred.
Certificates and/ or Licenses:
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Training for Class 6.2 Shipping.
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Training.
Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities; however, you may assist in training peers.

Work Schedule:

Core hours are 8AM to 5:00PM

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in a cold environment with exposure to dry ice, liquid nitrogen cryogenics, hazardous and infectious agents, and significant temperature changes.
  • Capability to push/pull 600 lb liquid nitrogen dewars and work from a platform ladder.
  • Use personal protective equipment and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs, and push up to 70 lbs.
  • Work with materials frozen on dry ice (-78°C) or liquid nitrogen (-196°C) for up to 6 hours daily.
  • Work in walk-in freezers or refrigerators periodically for up to 5 hours a day.
  • Use a computer for up to 6 hours daily.
  • Operate a forklift if required.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in Maryland is $13.82–$20.73.
