Job summary

Optical Cable Corporation in Roanoke, VA is seeking a Material Handler – Shipping/Packaging to prepare and package fiber optic cable for shipment, label correctly, and ensure orders meet customer specifications. You will lift and move items, operate a sit-down forklift, and collaborate with team members.

The position runs Monday–Friday, with pay from $16.75 to $30.02 per hour and a benefits package including health, dental, vision, and a 401(k).

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience: 1 year shipping experience preferred.
• Essential skills: computer and organizational abilities, ability to read and follow instructions, understanding of quality procedures, math and handwriting proficiency, team collaboration, forklift operation.

Responsibilities

• Lift, move, sort or place pallets, boxes and items from bin locations to staging areas, build areas, pallets or crates.
• Secure pallets/boxes and wrap them securely for shipping.
• Load outgoing shipments on trucks daily.
• Audit data sheets against picking tickets and record information accurately.
• Maintain inventory accuracy and proper labeling for packing, palletizing and shipping.
• Verify counts, weights or measurements against bills of lading or records.
• Attach correct UL labels where needed on cables.
• Process small packages via FedEx/UPS software.
• Participate in daily team projects and quarterly inventories.

Job Scope

• Works as team member to organize and stage outgoing freight for carriers to pick-up daily
• Communicates with other departments daily to solve problems
• Uses good judgment to minimize mistakes of shipping orders to wrong customers
• Proper use of equipment, including but not limited to the following; sit-down forklift, 2 wheeled cart and pallet jack

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: 1 year experience in Shipping preferred

Essential Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: Computer and organizational skills with the ability to properly package, inspect and ship product. Ability to read and follow basic instructions, ability to understand and implement quality procedures. Math and handwriting skills required and the ability to correctly complete all documentation. Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Pay close attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments accurately and to recognize and help resolve problems. Ability to operate a forklift.

Working Conditions: While performing this job, the employee must have the ability to stand for long periods of time as well as the ability to walk, sit, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must have the ability to manually move and lift 50 lbs. regularly and frequently up to and over 100 lbs. This job requires sight sufficient for significant reading and computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. This work also requires an individual with hearing sufficient for communication with co-workers and external truck drivers. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
