Founded in Boston, MA in 1902 by Reverend Edgar J Helms, Goodwill has been providing opportunities for men and women across America and around the world ever since. The Fort Wayne Goodwill can trace its roots back to 1936 when Reverend Helms proposed a federation of Goodwill Industries across northern Indiana. A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A MATERIAL HANDLER

As a Material Handler at Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana, Inc., you are an important part of our operations!

As a material handler, every day can be something a little different! Working out of our Operations Center on Brooklyn Ave., you collect donations from the community and issue tax receipts. You also get to hand sort and organize the donated goods to prepare for shipment to our area Goodwill Stores. Additionally, there are days that you go with the driver and act as a "driver's helper". You will be assisting the driver with pick up and delivery between the stores, operations center and corporate office.

Essential Functions

  • Loads and unloads trucks/carts manually, with hand truck, or with pallet jack at all locations.
  • Accepts donations and distributes tax receipts.
  • Pre-sorts donations as required.
  • Assists and follows the directions of the truck driver while on route.
  • Assists and directs truck driver with backing of truck and with directions for home pick ups.
  • Keeps area and trucks clean and neat.
  • Follows all safety rules and practices.
  • Operates compactor, if trained.
  • Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling required.
  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the VP of Operations & E-Commerce in the process of carrying out the mission of Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana, Inc.
  • In order to promote customer and donor satisfaction it is mandatory for employees who come in contact with the public to maintain a positive work outlook and to project a pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor at all times when dealing with customers, donors, co workers, and clients.

Non-essential Functions

  • Reports need for any necessary materials/equipment.
  • Operates forklift, if licensed.
  • Ensures walkways, aisles, exits, and safety equipment areas (i.e., fire extinguishers or fire hoses) are clear and unobstructed.
  • Bales salvage as needed, if assigned and trained.

ATTENDANCE

Goodwill, your co-workers, and our customers depend on you to be at work as scheduled.

JOB PERFORMANCE

Reviewed upon initial hire at 30, 60 and 90 days, and annually thereafter, by the VP of Operations * E-Commerce.

  • Various production equipment including hand truck or dolly, pallet jack, and carts.

Heavy work: Pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

The ability to fully perform lifting and moving duties is mandatory.

The worker is subject to both outdoor and indoor environmental conditions.
