Job summary

Bowhead is seeking a reliable Material Handler to support the NSWCDD Dahlgren Division. The role involves receiving, staging materials, using band saws, operating forklifts, and ensuring a safe, organized shop environment.

Candidates must have at least one year of material handling experience, a high school diploma, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance. Proficiency with MS Office and blueprint reading is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have at least 1 year of material handling experience.
• High school diploma is required.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and stand/walk for long periods.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance; US citizenship required.
• Must read/write/speak English fluently.
• Experience reading blueprints is preferred.
• Able to work independently or as part of a team with good judgment.

Responsibilities

• Receiving and unloading materials from delivery trucks.
• Organizing and staging raw materials in designated areas.
• Cutting materials to specified lengths using a band saw.
• Safely operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
• Using dial calipers and tape measures to verify dimensions.
• Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Material Handler (EPFAB-2026-26095):

Bowhead is seeking a reliable and motivated Material Handler to support the Engineering and Prototype Shop at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD).

Bowhead offers:

• SCA Material Handler pay at $17.76 per hour, plus $5.09 per hour for H&W (Health and Welfare)
• A total of 33 paid days off per year. (Described below)
• Paid vacation accrued up to 15 days a year.
• Paid sick leave accrued up to 7 days a year.
• Paid holidays 11 per year.
• Up to $175 for safety boots every two years.
• Up to $5250 for college tuition per year.
• Up to $5250 for training per year.
• Prescription safety glasses are provided yearly.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working with manufactured materials in a fast-paced shop environment.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Receiving and unloading materials from delivery trucks.
• Organizing and staging raw materials in designated areas.
• Cutting materials to specified lengths using a band saw, as directed.
• Safely operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to move materials throughout the shop.
• Using standard measuring tools, including dial calipers and tape measures, to verify dimensions.
• Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must have a high school diploma.
• Must have at least one (1) year of experience with material handling operations.
• Prior experience in a manufacturing or fabrication setting is preferred.
• Basic level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints.
• Capable of using standard measuring tools such as dial calipers and tape measures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees, customers, and management, and respond to instructions/assignments.
• Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
• Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, and be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically.
• SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level. U.S. citizenship is a requirement for a Secret clearance at this location. Bowhead will assist in obtaining a clearance upon hire, unless the candidate already possesses one.

Target salary is $17.76/hour commensurate with experience
