Responsibilities

• Collect and remove recycling, trash, and waste from buildings and designated areas.
• Empty and reline trash and recycling containers.
• Sort recyclable materials into the proper containers.
• Pick up and dispose of bulk trash and recycling.
• Transport materials to designated disposal or holding areas.
• Drive a truck, van, or other university vehicle to make pickups around campus.
• Use equipment such as hand trucks, compactors, balers, and forklifts as needed.
• Keep outdoor areas, parking lots, garages, and loading docks clean.
• Maintain equipment and work areas.
• Assist with special events, move-ins, snow emergencies, or other campus needs when necessary.

Position Overview

The Material Handler is responsible for collecting, sorting, and transporting recycling, trash, and other waste throughout the university campus. This is a hands-on, physical position that involves working both indoors and outdoors.

Main Responsibilities

• Collect and remove recycling, trash, and waste from buildings and designated areas
• Empty and reline trash and recycling containers
• Sort recyclable materials into the proper containers
• Pick up and dispose of bulk trash and recycling
• Transport materials to designated disposal or holding areas
• Drive a truck, van, or other university vehicle to make pickups around campus
• Use equipment such as hand trucks, compactors, balers, and forklifts as needed
• Keep outdoor areas, parking lots, garages, and loading docks clean
• Maintain equipment and work areas
• Assist with special events, move-ins, snow emergencies, or other campus needs when necessary

Requirements

• Valid driver's license and good driving record required
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable with continuous walking, standing, and climbing stairs
• Able to work outdoors and in different weather conditions
• Able to follow written and verbal instructions
• Must be comfortable interacting with university staff, students, and visitors
• Recycling or materials-handling experience is helpful but not required
• Experience driving a manual transmission is a plus
