Responsibilities

Under direction of Master, assisting in directing and overseeing the activities of the vessel senior crew; including deck, engineering, production and safety. Under direction of Master, shares responsibility for navigation and primary vessel activity which can include fishing, processing or hauling freight.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with pre-season and day to day operations of the vessel. When Master is off duty, responsible for operating the vessel in accordance with Trident policy and local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Works with Corporate Manager and Master to lead, manage and direct capital projects (e.g. drydocking, installation and repair projects, major purchases) including the scheduling, budgeting and compliance with license, permit and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Assists in overseeing and establishing the performance and operation standards for all vessel deck and navigation systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Assists in directing and overseeing required documentation forthe primary vessel functions.
  • Analyzes and leverages human resource needs to assist with short- and long-term projects.
  • Confers with Master to determine feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel deck and engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs,and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Provides direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the deck activities.
  • Analyzes and maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operationsand develops recommendations accordingly.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:Must hold valid USCG Mate License of 500 GRT of greater.

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)

  • Must have at least 2 years of experience as Mate in the fishery being applied for.
  • Intermediate firefighting skills.
  • Basic navigation and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct safety drills for crew and guests.
  • Ability to manage the medical/first aid needs of the vessel.
  • Appropriate licenses/permits of trade (e.g., CG license of appropriate tonnage. STCW endorsement, etc.) when required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.

Preferred Education & Experiences:

  • Extensive seafood of related industry experience preferred; Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Able to work/communicate with Claims and HR departments to monitor crewneeds/issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for.
  • Familiarity with production needs and willingness to work with others to support production needs.

Work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Work Ability Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision.
