Job summary

BAC is seeking a Master Welder/Test Tank technician to test and repair coil leaks, mentor junior mechanics, and drive safety and lean improvements in the Coil Department. This role reports to the Station Lead and requires strong welding skills and leadership ability.

Responsibilities include maintaining ISO documentation, tracking metrics, and coordinating with Team Leads and Inspectors to ensure quality and safety.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of coil department experience preferred.
  • Strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Ability to lead small groups and mentor junior mechanics.
  • Familiarity with safety, quality and ISO procedures in production.
  • Ability to read BAC drawings and use measuring tools.

Responsibilities

Job description

POSITION PURPOSEA shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of testing all coils at the test tank and properly repairing all leaks. As a senior mechanic, the Master Welder/Test Tank technician is an influencer, who is also responsible for leading, training and mentoring junior mechanics in the department. The Master Welder/Test Tank technician demonstrates BAC’s values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIESOwns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.Update and post metrics as assigned such as leak rates, coil quality traveler.Train mechanics on lessons learned and process improvements.Participate in continuous improvement activities and projects.Conduct daily review of scheduled work.Test and repair coil leaks.Track coil proficiency log in a spreadsheet including comments and action taken.Ensure Quality metric report is accurate at all times & collaborate with Team Lead & Station Lead regarding discrepancies.Interpret work tickets and channel completed products to staging area for the next operation.Complete and maintain ISO documents on a daily basis.Practice and sustain 5’s methods.Communicate with critical stakeholders (Team Leads, Inspectors, Supply Chain, etc.)Assist with the completion of ongoing training for all employees in the following areas: safety, quality / ISO procedures, production goals and equipment cross training.Mentors and drives LEAN principles in the area.Continually help develop ways to improve the safety performance and eliminate any safety issues identified in his/her area and within the plant.Help achieve departmental safety goals including near miss reporting and safety metrics.Contribute to departmental safety improvements.Ensure team and individual activities embrace sustainability,reduce the impact on the environment, minimize waste, maximize recycling, minimize energy and water usage.Support a culture of innovation through original thinking to improve processes, methods, systems or services; translates new ideas into business opportunities.Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.NATURE & SCOPEThis position will report to the Station Lead and Team Lead of the Coil Dept.KNOWLEDGE & SKILLSMinimum of one year of experience in the coil department is preferred.Working command of the English language, both written and spoken.Possess good communication skills and the ability to work professionally with BAC co-workers.Demonstrate strong skills in initiative, problem solving, and working in a “team” environment.Ability to lead small groups.Ability to mentor and train junior mechanics.Ability to understand and react to job schedules.Flexible and able to adapt quickly to change.Good product knowledge and understand the Coil and Assembly process.General knowledge in the construction of BAC related equipment.Working knowledge of welding symbols.Read measuring devices: ruler, combination square, protractor, metal gauge and micrometer.Able to read and understand all types of BAC drawings (assembly, fabrication, welding).Able to use basic math and handheld measuring tools.Proficient in oxy-fuel and plasma arc burning.Pulse MIG Certification (WPS1-1MP6)Able to complete Visual Weld Training (B31.5) with a passing score of 70%, every 3 years.Oxyfuel Certification (WPS1-106)Copper Sweat Certification (WPQ 101 -107TB102) preferred.Tube to tube or tube repair (test tank)Stick Weld Certification (WPS4)Header repair (test tank)Understand bill of material.Certified to operate overhead crane and jib boom and be aware of balance and load limits.Good understanding of Lean and Continuous Improvement.High degree of knowledge in all appropriate procedures, policies, and instructions of ISO for area of assignment to ensure quality.Demonstrate a commitment to safety.Be aware of normal hazards and take appropriate precautions.WORKING CONDITIONSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected.
