Job summary

Sugar Express, LLC is seeking a part-time Fireman to maintain steam pressure and manage fuel and water for locomotive operations. The Fireman works closely with the Engineer to ensure safe operation and compliance with railroad safety procedures.

Responsibilities include assisting during excursions, monitoring gauges, preparing locomotives, and supporting special events. Requires 18+, strong English, and a Florida driver’s license; heavy lifting and hot cab conditions are expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Thorough understanding of locomotive appliances, brake systems, injectors, combustion controls.
• Ability to work in a high-pressure, hot cab environment as part of a synchronized team with the Engineer.
• Must pass a railroad rulebook or safety test.
• Ability to read, speak and write English.
• Must have a valid Florida driver’s license Class E or above.

Responsibilities

• Assist locomotive engineer during excursion operations.
• Maintain proper steam pressure and monitor locomotive systems.
• Manage fuel, water, and firebox operations during trips.
• Assist with locomotive preparation, servicing, and inspections.
• Monitor gauges, injectors, and other locomotive components.
• Support safe train operations and compliance with railroad safety procedures.
• Assist with cleaning and maintaining locomotive appearance.
• Support themed excursions, special events, and seasonal operations.
• Occasionally introduce sand into the firebox to scour boiler tubes.
• Serve as the co-pilot by monitoring signals and communicating hazards to the Engineer.
• Assist in pre-trip preparation including oiling/greasing moving parts and checking for leaks.
• Assist in loading fuel oil and taking on water during station stops.
