You will plan, coordinate, and execute projects, supervise helpers, estimate materials, coordinate with contractors, and maintain records. Five years in electrical trades and a Texas Master Electrician License with a valid TX driver’s license are required.

Job description

The Master Electrician is responsible for performing and overseeing electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work for the city, with primary duties assigned to Parks & Recreation facilities, athletic field lighting systems, irrigation control panels, scoreboards, pavilions, and park buildings. This position also provides electrical expertise and support to other City departments as needed. Work involves planning, coordinating, and executing electrical projects in compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and departmental priorities. The Master Electrician exercises considerable independent judgment and technical skills and may provide guidance or supervision to other maintenance personnel assisting with electrical tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems in Parks & Recreation facilities, including lighting, outlets, wiring, panels, and control systems.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs athletic field lighting, irrigation controllers, scoreboards, and other recreation-related electrical equipment.
  • Performs inspections of electrical systems to ensure compliance with NEC (National Electrical Code), City policies, and safety regulations.
  • Coordinates and performs electrical work on capital projects, renovations, and upgrades in parks, trails, and recreational facilities.
  • Assists other City departments (Facilities, Public Works, Utilities, etc.) with electrical projects and emergencies as assigned.
  • Prepares and maintains records of work performed, including inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Works with contractors and vendors to ensure project specifications and timelines are met.
  • Estimates labor, materials, and equipment needs for projects; assist in budget development for electrical work.
  • Operates City vehicles, lifts, and power equipment necessary to perform electrical duties safely.
  • Provides technical guidance and may train other staff assisting with electrical repairs.
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA and City safety practices; maintains a safe work environment.
  • Responds to emergency electrical issues during and after normal work hours as needed.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and provide quality customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
Additional Requirements
  • Some positions require the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon assignment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
  • Work is performed under the close supervision of the Parks Superintendent.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of
  • Advanced principles, practices, and methods of electrical installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable state and local codes.
  • Tools, equipment, and materials used in electrical trade.
  • Safety hazards, precautions, and procedures related to electrical systems and field work.
Ability to
  • Plan, layout, and complete complex electrical projects with minimal supervision.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues in athletic fields, facilities, and public buildings.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Prepare cost estimates, material lists, and project schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Work cooperatively with other departments, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Respond effectively in emergency situations.
Education & Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade, including experience with commercial or municipal facilities.

Licenses, Certificates & Registrations

Current Texas Master Electrician License required.
Valid Texas Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent standing, walking, bending, and use of hands and arms. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Requires visual acuity to inspect wiring and equipment, and the ability to distinguish colors in electrical wiring.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of environments. Exposure to electrical hazards, heights, loud noise, weather extremes, and construction sites. May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays in response to emergencies.
