Job Summary


Involves manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to promote relaxation, relieve sore muscles and back pain, and / or enhance athletic or general physical performance.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications


  • Two years experience as a Certified Massage Therapist
  • One year experience delivering care to patients in a hospital setting, or hospital based massage therapy training for massage therapist prior to beginning of employment
  • California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) Certification
  • CPR Certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider or American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Maintenance of continuing education: maintains an active license by meeting the requirements of the California State Massage Therapy Council, with a focus on professional development in areas relevant to job assignment and career goals
  • Advanced skill in administering manual massage therapy treatments to patients
  • Advanced knowledge of massage therapy standards, concepts, practices and procedures
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills to obtain information and work effectively with a diverse client group
  • Advanced ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality with sensitive matters involving injuries and treatments
  • Advanced ability to evaluate information and detect changes in conditions
  • Ability to interpret information and use it to effectively treat patients/ clients
  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize workload
  • Assesses patient health status, and then plans, implements, monitors, & evaluates care for patients
  • Provides massage therapy treatments according to UCSF standards of care, and UCSF policies and procedures as well as the guidelines established by the California State Massage Therapy Council
  • Provides massage therapy education and counseling for patients and families
  • Participates as a member of the patient care team. Integrates massage therapy with other forms of care being provided to patient
  • Treats appropriate patients based on priorities of care; collects and evaluates data that are relevant to patient health problems. Data used for assessment are compared to appropriate standards
  • Interventions are implemented, monitored, and evaluated; demonstrates an understanding of the importance of Massage Therapy about other forms of care being provided; Massage Therapy treatments are integrated with medical goals and plan of care
  • Massage therapy treatments are adjusted when clinically indicated


Preferred Qualifications


  • National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork Certification (NCETM/TMB)


License/Certification


  • California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) Certification
