General Description Of Duties And Responsibilites

The contracted Head, Neck, and Shoulder Massage Therapist to provide therapeutic massage services for clients in a North Carolina-licensed residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program operating under Clinical Coverage Policy 8D-3/ 5600E and ASAM Level 3.1. The ideal candidate will have experience working with SUD and behavioral health clients, demonstrating comfort and familiarity with their unique needs and respecting the biopsychosocial_ and spiritual nature of SUD as a brain disease. The therapist will deliver targeted massage therapy to support recovery, stress reduction, and overall wellness while adhering to the ethical standards of SUD treatment programs in North Carolina.

This role involves providing therapeutic massage services to clients in a Residential setting, focusing on pain management, relaxation, and overall wellness intended to meet the mental health, developmental disability, and/or substance abuse needs of clients with significant functional deficits or who because of negative environmental, medical or biological factors, are at risk of developing or increasing the magnitude of such functional deficits. The Massage Therapist will work closely with clients to assess their needs and tailor treatments accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of the integrated care team; collaborating with team members on patient needs, goals, plans, and response to treatment.
  • Therapeutic Massage Services: Provide head, neck, and shoulder massage therapy to clients in recovery from SUD, focusing on reducing stress, alleviating physical tension, and promoting relaxation to support emotional and physical stabilization.
  • Individual and Group Sessions: Deliver massage therapy in individual and, where appropriate, group settings, creating a safe, supportive environment that fosters trust and recovery-oriented outcomes.
  • Holistic Support: Incorporate techniques that address the biopsychosocial and spiritual dimensions of SUD, such as promoting mindfulness and body awareness to enhance clients’ connection to their recovery process.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with behavioral health clinicians, medical providers, and peer support specialists to integrate massage therapy into comprehensive treatment plans, ensuring alignment with ASAM 3.1 criteria and North Carolina 5600E policy.
  • Client Assessment and Documentation: Assess clients’ suitability for massage therapy, monitor their response to treatment, and maintain accurate, timely documentation in compliance with state regulations and ethical standards.
  • Education and Empowerment: Educate clients on the benefits of massage therapy for stress management, pain relief, and recovery, empowering them to incorporate wellness practices into their lives.
  • Ethical Practice: Adhere to the ethical guidelines of North Carolina SUD treatment programs, including maintaining client confidentiality, obtaining informed consent, and respecting cultural, spiritual, and socioeconomic diversity.
  • Safety and Professionalism: Ensure a safe, hygienic environment for massage therapy, following infection control protocols and state regulations for massage practice.
  • Ensures confidentiality regarding sensitive and protected information in accordance with HIPAA and CFR-42C.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Valid licensure as a Massage Therapist (LMBT) in North Carolina, in good standing with the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy.
  • Completion of an accredited massage therapy program with specialized training in head, neck, and shoulder techniques.
  • Certification in modalities relevant to stress reduction or behavioral health (e.g., relaxation massage, myofascial release) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing massage therapy to individuals with substance use disorders and/or behavioral health conditions in a clinical, residential, or wellness setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of SUD as a biopsychosocial and spiritual brain disease, with experience supporting recovery-oriented care.
  • Experience working in ASAM Level 3.1 or similar residential SUD programs is highly desirable.
  • Clear Healthcare Registry report.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in head, neck, and shoulder massage techniques that promote relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and support emotional well-being.
  • Comfort and sensitivity working with SUD and behavioral health clients, including those with trauma histories or co-occurring disorders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build trust with clients and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina Clinical Coverage Policy 5600E, ASAM 3.1 standards, and SAMHSA’s core values for SUD treatment (e.g., trauma-informed care, person-centered approaches).
  • Commitment to cultural humility and providing equitable, inclusive care.

Ethical Standards

  • The candidate must adhere to all ethical guidelines for SUD treatment programs in North Carolina, including:
  • Maintaining client confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and state regulations.
  • Obtaining informed consent for all massage therapy interventions.
  • Practicing within the scope of licensure and avoiding dual relationships with clients.
  • Demonstrating respect for clients’ cultural, spiritual, and socioeconomic backgrounds, aligning with SAMHSA’s emphasis on person-centered and trauma-informed care
