Maritime Electro-Optical / Infrared (EO/IR) Imaging

The Advanced Concepts & Technologies Group is looking for exceptional engineers, scientists, and mathematicians who are excited to work on challenging problems and join our team. The group develops technology to protect and enhance the effectiveness of our deployed sailors, soldiers, and assets while enabling operations in a rapidly evolving complex threat environment. The group’s research and development activities include architecture and concept design, advanced algorithms development, software and hardware prototyping, experimental field-testing, and data analysis. Our team focuses on creating new capabilities through analysis of critical problems leading to rapid prototyping of software and hardware. Of particular interest to the group is the development of concepts to address key national problems through advanced electronic warfare systems prototypes, advanced sensors prototypes, novel signal processing techniques, mathematical optimization approaches, and artificial intelligence to enable the development of next generation systems for fleet and surface assets.

Due to the wide-ranging nature of research, this dynamic group is comprised of a team of scientists and engineers with expertise in physics, mathematics, computer science, and various engineering backgrounds. The group values inclusiveness, fosters mentoring at all levels, and promotes critical and innovative thinking to address the needs of the nation. The successful candidate will be part of a highly collaborative team that thrives in solving complex challenges, fosters innovation, supports career growth, and is dedicated to making a positive impact for our nation

Job Description

The Advanced Concepts and Technologies Group is seeking a candidate to conduct research in maritime electro-optical / infrared (EO/IR) imaging and help develop capability for next-generation systems for the DoD. The work will include several roles including (1) the operation of custom imaging systems and experimental lab and field testing as part of a team and (2) image and signal processing and algorithm development of imagery data for specific mission purposes. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently on problems exhibiting critical thinking as well as in collaborative team environments. Work tasks could include systems analysis to understand problems, developing new concepts to solve problems, developing and implementing new algorithms and processing approaches, operating imaging systems during lab and field testing, conducting data analysis on collected imagery, and presenting results to external sponsors with clear communication skills.

Requirements

Ph.D. (or M.S. degree with at least 5-10 years of experience) in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Aeronautics/Astronautics, or related field; significant programming skills in any language (MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, Java, etc.) and ability to solve complex problems. Self-motivated with a proven ability to address a broad range of problems both independently and collaboratively with highly dynamic, interdisciplinary teams.

Hands-on experience with imaging systems in the laboratory or in field testing is helpful. Experience in data analysis and image processing using Matlab, Python and C++ is beneficial as well as AI/ML techniques for image recognition.
