Job summary

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center offering interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming. The Maritime Center Specialist II (Education) will deliver informal and formal programs at Nauticus’ campus and around the region to enhance public knowledge of maritime themes.

Ideal candidates will possess strong public speaking skills, enjoy engaging with people, and adapt to various programming settings.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in a museum or visitor attraction environment preferred.
• Previous experience in formal or informal education environments preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct public presentations for school groups on/offsite.
• Engage with museum guests through formal programming and informal interactions.
• Collaborate with educators to assist with program development, creation, and execution.
• Assist with promotion and execution of education programs and events.
• Present STEM and history programs to diverse audiences, including school groups, families, teachers, and the public.
• Perform interactive education programs including floor programs, workshops, summer camps and events.
• Assist guests with special needs, questions, or complaints courteously.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.

Nauticus is currently seeking a Maritime Center Specialist II (Education). This role is responsible for performing informal and formal programs at Nauticus’ campus and around the region to increase the public’s knowledge and understanding of maritime themes. A successful candidate will have strong public speaking skills, a desire to engage with people, and the ability to adapt.

• The Department Hiring Hourly Wage: $16.00***

Essential Functions

• Conduct public presentations for school groups both on and offsite
• Engage with the museum guests through formal programming and informal interactions
• Collaborate with other educators to assist with program development, creation, and execution
• Assist with promotion and execution of education programs and events
• Present STEM and history programs to diverse audiences, including but not limited to school groups, family groups, special youth groups, teachers, and the public including the set up for programs, events, and activities.
• Perform interactive education program including floor programs, workshops, summer camp and special events
• Assist guests with special needs, questions, or complaints in a courteous and responsible manner
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the public
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time, life from ground to above the shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
• Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience

Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent and considerable experience working in a museum or visitor attraction environment.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510

Work Hours: Year-round position working weekdays, weekends and some holidays; Varied schedule 20 hours per week

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

• The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
