Job summary

Little River Materials is seeking a Marine Terminal Operator to safely move, load, unload, store and transfer cargo at a barge terminal. You will operate terminal equipment, coordinate vessel activities, and ensure cargo handling complies with company and regulatory requirements.

The role requires monitoring transfers between barges, trucks, railcars and storage facilities; performing routine maintenance and inspections; and reporting issues promptly.

Qualifications

  • Experience in marine, terminal, warehouse, industrial, or heavy‑equipment operations preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and environments such as river ports, inland terminals, and marine facilities.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and cargo‑handling procedures.
  • Proficiency in equipment operation with strong safety awareness.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting ability.
  • Experience with inventory control and documentation management.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload barges using conveyors, pumps, loaders, and other terminal equipment.
  • Monitor cargo transfers between barges, trucks, railcars, and storage facilities to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Inspect barges, docks, and terminal equipment to ensure safety, compliance, and operational readiness.
  • Accurately record cargo quantities, shipping documentation, and inventory data.
  • Coordinate with vessel crews, truck drivers, rail operators, and terminal personnel.
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and general housekeeping throughout the terminal.
  • Adhere to all environmental, safety, and security procedures, including spill prevention and emergency response protocols.
  • Assist with mooring, securing, and positioning barges as needed.
  • Safely and efficiently operate various types of heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, conveyor systems, and other terminal equipment, to support daily operations.
  • Identify and report operational issues, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns promptly.
  • Provide support to the maintenance department as needed upon completion of barge loading and unloading activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support business operations.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and environments such as river ports, inland terminals, and marine facilities.
  • Physical capability to lift, climb, bend, and perform duties around water safely.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and cargo‑handling procedures.
  • Proficiency in equipment operation with strong safety awareness.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting ability.
  • Experience with inventory control and documentation management.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and tolerate exposure to weather, noise, dust, and industrial equipment.
Physical Qualifications
  • Ability to exert force when pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying objects, occasionally up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and climbing throughout the workday.
  • Precise control of levers, pedals, and equipment controls requiring strong hand‑eye coordination.
  • Ability to maintain clear vision and depth perception to accurately judge distances and identify hazards.
  • Ability to hear verbal instructions, radio communication, and equipment sounds.
  • Ability to maintain balance and stability while operating equipment on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to safely enter and exit equipment multiple times per shift.
