Job description

Job Description

Must have shipyard experience to be considered.

Pay rate: $27 per hour - 1st and 2nd shift available.

This position involves performing production welding on ships or in a shop to support structural repairs and modernization of marine vessels, including US Naval Vessels, Military Sealift Command ships, and commercial ships. The following qualifications and skills are desired:

Qualifications and Experience
  1. Ability to understand instructions, drawings, and correspondence.
  2. Knowledge of ship repair terminology and compartment naming conventions.
  3. Physical and medical capability to wear PPE as per OSHA standards, including hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, goggles, respirators, safety harnesses, safety lines, flotation gear, etc.
  4. Effective communication skills with supervisors.
  5. Understanding of SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW welding processes.
  6. Certification in all welding positions: SMAW, FCAW, GMAW with full penetration welds and permanent backing.
  7. Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and standards manuals (Navy/MSC/ABS).
  8. Knowledge of marine welding equipment and processes.
  9. Ability to operate and maintain welding and hand tools.
  10. Basic math skills, including working with fractions and decimals, and understanding measurement systems.
  11. Up to four years of related welding experience.
Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate with helpers and fire watch to complete tasks.
  2. Ensure safety protocols are followed, especially before hot work.
  3. Arrive on time, complete shifts as scheduled, and meet daily work goals.
  4. Maintain safety standards and keep work areas clean.
  5. Deliver quality work and documentation as required.
  6. Follow company policies on non-discrimination and anti-harassment.
  7. Follow instructions and consult with supervisors on unexpected issues.
Work Tasks
  • Prepare work areas for hot work, including verifying certifications.
  • Inspect and prepare surfaces for welding.
  • Inspect welds and document conditions.
  • Familiarize with safety requirements and implement lock-out/tag-out procedures.
Work Environment

Varies from office-like conditions to outdoor work with exposure to weather, noise, and confined spaces. PPE is mandatory at all times. Work may involve heights, mechanical lifts, and working in tight spaces with potential hazards like falling objects and moving machinery.

Physical Demands

Must be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally, standing, walking, climbing, working at heights, and operating tools. Must adapt to various work environments, including confined spaces and elevated platforms.
