Job summary

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, seeks a Marine Electronics Technician to support fleet modernization on Naval vessels. The role involves removing, installing, and upgrading electrical systems aboard ships and may require travel to shipyards and bases nationwide and abroad.

You will work from blueprints and engineering documents, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure safety and quality standards. Weekend/overtime may be required depending on contracts and workload.

Role

HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Marine Electronics Technician candidate will support PM, working closely with our skilled trades teams, on Naval Vessels, utilizing various tools of the trades, removing, installing and upgrading industrial systems and equipment. Weekend and/or overtime hours required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set. Selected candidates will be required to commute to and maintain access to shipyards and military bases located around the Hampton Roads area depending on contract obligations. Selected candidates may be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

As An HII Marine Electronics Technician, You Will
  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures by performing alterations and installations for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.
  • Apply knowledge of production processes towards completion of complicated and non-routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and related equipment at company, and/or field locations in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose systems and equipment to efficiently eliminate problems.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications and relations.
  • Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cables, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.
  • Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections, repairs, installations and reconnections on existing and new equipment for a complete installation.
  • Perform a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks including duties outside of specialty to complete installation or work assignment.
  • Complete Quality documents necessary for reporting and verification of the work performed.

Position Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have a High School High School diploma, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related shipboard electrical shipboard experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain various shipyard and base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain them throughout employment.
  • Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and local shipyards.
  • Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.
  • Must have experience installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing high and low voltage electrical distribution systems and its associated equipment and cabling.
  • Must have strong knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for cables and equipment to be installed and connected.
  • Must have experience planning and laying out cable runs according to specs, drawings, and proper installation practices, preparing the areas for welding and assisting in the attachment process.
  • Must have experience installing, opening, modifying, and logging MCTs, MCPs and stuffing tubes and completing tests for final inspections.
  • Must be proficient in proper methods of disconnecting and reconnecting new and existing equipment and completing supporting OQE.
  • Must be experienced with the proper, safe usage of multimeters, meggers, and testing procedures.
  • Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and local shipyards.
  • Must be able to accurately communicate with Team Leads and co-workers regarding the technical aspects of the work being performed.
Preferential Consideration For
  • Candidates with current Fiber Optic certification and installation experience are preferred.
  • Candidates with multipin connector fabrication experience and certification in accordance with NAVSEA STD 009-73 are preferred.
  • Candidates with NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience installing DDG Modernization Backfits: S/A 71615K DVSS, S/A 71726K IBNS, S/A 717427K Digital Indicators, S/A 84226K OOD Flat Panels, and S/A 94979K HM&E Condition System 2.0 are very highly preferred.
  • Candidates who have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or a skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Candidate with a current or active DoD clearance preferred.
  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
