Job description

Company Overview: Glosten is a naval architecture and marine engineering firm that has served the marine industry for over 65 years. We work in teams to accomplish exciting projects in a stimulating, fast-paced, and collegial environment. We are an employee-owned company drawn to unique and challenging marine projects. We have grown steadily and deliberately to a team of 110 employees who are ready to solve complex problems and think outside the box. We continuously strive to improve our business practices and technical performance to better serve the industry. We believe the secret to our success is our talented team and our culture of mutual respect and cooperation.

Glosten's Marine Construction group supports the on-the-water construction-related expansion and renewal of the growing, yet aging, infrastructure in North America. Our work supports dredging and marine-based heavy civil projects such as dams, bridge construction and demolition, and often also includes salvage engineering. Join our team and apply your practical engineering skills to solving unique solutions to floating construction challenges.

Job Description

We are looking for an engineer who is hands-on and has experience or interest in heavy civil construction, dredging, heavy equipment, crane engineering, and/or salvage.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Are passionate about the maritime and construction industries.
  • Thrive in a culture of collaboration, innovation, and integrity.
  • Are committed to client service, including taking on our clients' problems as our own, becoming the clients' advocate, and cultivating long-term client relationships.
  • Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and graphical communication.
  • Are motivated to identify and pursue internal and external professional growth opportunities, including areas outside their specific discipline.
  • Have direct experience working with or for heavy civil contractors, dredging contractors, or salvage companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply specific technical knowledge of hydrostatics, stability, and structural analyses.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of the maritime regulatory guidance and submittal processes, field work (ship checking and shipboard systems performance surveys), shipyard practices, and contract specifications.
  • Manage small to medium-sized projects including client communications, leading engineering teams, assigning tasks, managing scope and budget, scheduling, and developing proposals. Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standards, techniques, procedures, and criteria
  • Understand and contribute to resolution of a wide range of technical issues outside traditional naval architecture disciplines, including marine engineering, machine design, and drafting.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and other team members.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in the maritime sector, consulting engineering, marine construction, or dredging industry.
  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture is preferred. Other adjacent engineering degrees will be considered.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure. Applicants without a PE license who would be eligible to take the licensing exam in their first year may be considered.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Rhino3D, GHS, and Microsoft Office software packages.
  • Experience with FEMAP or other finite element analysis software is preferred.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, teamwork abilities, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience designing to regulatory rules such as American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Rules, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 46: Shipping, and USACE EM385.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. Due to project restrictions, Glosten will only consider applicants with unrestricted access to work in the United States or those eligible for TN visas.
  • Some travel and fieldwork are required. Some project assignments may require a valid driver's license, TWIC card, and/or current passport.
  • This position is ideally based in one of our office locations (Seattle, WA; Bellingham, WA; or Providence, RI). Employees hired for an in-person role will be eligible for participation in the company's hybrid remote work policy after 90 days of employment.
  • While in-office work is strongly preferred, fully remote arrangements may be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates
