Job summary

The State of Maine invites qualified applicants for a Biologist II in Augusta. The role leads monitoring work in the Marine Unit of the DEP, supporting the Marine Environmental Monitoring Program.

Requires a biology-related degree and supervisory experience, with field and data analysis duties across estuarine and coastal habitats. Travel on boats is required; a strong background in data interpretation, reporting, and public outreach will be valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field with 3 years’ supervisory lab/field experience.
  • Advanced degree in marine biology or ecology preferred.
  • Experience supervising technical and field staff.
  • Experience with water, sediment or biological monitoring on coastal waters.
  • Strong data management and statistical analysis skills.
  • Excellent scientific writing and public outreach ability.

Responsibilities

  • Purchase and maintain monitoring equipment.
  • Implement quality management procedures.
  • Conduct water, sediment and biological monitoring.
  • Manage and analyze data.
  • Develop new methodologies.
  • Review permits.
  • Assist in reporting for state/federal needs.
  • Develop/implement biological assessment methods for estuarine/marine waters and coastal wetlands.
  • Create/update communication materials for partners and the public.
  • Supervise technical staff.
  • Extended in-state, seasonal travel and work on small boats.
