Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking observers to work at sea collecting and recording data and biological samples, with a 3-week paid training and deployment from ports across New England and the Mid- Atlantic states.

Responsibilities include recording gear and fishing activity, collecting data on catch and incidental takes, and providing quantitative bios, vessel, and gear‑selectivity information. Candidates must have a high school diploma and be able to travel to ports.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in biology or related field.
  • At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics preferred.
  • Experience with data entry on computers.
  • At-sea experience.
  • Coursework in Dichotomous Keys.
  • Experience collecting field data and entering databases.

  • Work at sea collecting and recording data and biological samples
  • Record detailed information on the gear and fishing activity of the vessels
  • Work on deck on vessels ranging from 20' to 100'
  • Collect data on fish catch and discard and incidental takes such as marine mammals, seabirds, and marine turtles
  • Attend a 3-week paid training in person
  • Be deployed from ports throughout New England and Mid-Atlantic states
  • Assess gear types including trawl, gillnet, longline, and handline
  • Provide quantitative biological, vessel, and gear‑selectivity information for various fisheries
  • Document stock information to protect the environment and preserve future generations of fish/fishermen
Requirements
  • High school diploma is required
  • Experience with data entry on computers
  • Monitor candidates must be U.S. citizens, or be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Candidates must be physically able, as determined by a licensed physician’s certification to perform observer duties
  • Your own transportation is required
  • Candidates are expected to commit to the program for at least one year
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field from an accredited college or university is preferred
  • At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics preferred
  • At-sea experience
  • Coursework in Dichotomous Keys
  • Experience collecting field data and entering databases
