Job summary

MSA, The Safety Company in Jacksonville, NC, is seeking a Manufacturing Process Engineer (Industrial Engineer) to drive lean improvements, standard work, and process documentation. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program.
  • Ability to read and interpret assembly diagrams and documents.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and lead projects in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 5% between U.S. facilities.

  • Conduct time studies, define manufacturing costs and develop/maintain work standards and documentation.
  • Improve processes, including quality, cell layouts, throughput and cycle times, with CI initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Production, Materials, and Quality to ensure documentation is complete and released.
  • Lead best-practice and standard work documentation initiatives.
  • Provide training for problem solving and lean improvement efforts with factory managers.
  • Participate in NPD teams to ensure manufacturability and design for assembly feasibility.
  • Recommend capital equipment and manage installation and commissioning.
  • Review production variances, identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop constructive relationships across organizational levels.

Responsibilities
  • Actively advocate behavior-based safety in all aspects of MSA operations, adhering to company and site-specific safety policies, practices, and programs. Initiate efforts to improve workplace ergonomics.
  • Conduct time studies, define manufacturing costs and develop/implement/maintain work standards and manufacturing documentation (routings, etc.).
  • Assist in developing and implementing measures to improve processes, including quality, cell layouts, throughput and cycle times, making recommendations and working in conjunction with CI (continuous improvement) initiatives.
  • Interface with various departments including Engineering, Production, Materials, and Quality to ensure documentation is complete and used during design and production. Review and approve all manufacturing level documentation prior to release.
  • Lead efforts to establish best practices and standard work documentation.
  • Initiate, lead, participate, and provide training (problem solving, work flexing, etc.) required to effectively complete improvement efforts. Work together with factory managers to sustain improvements. Participate in MSA Business System activities that include daily communication meetings, department performance monitoring and problem solving.
  • Actively participate on new product development (NPD) teams. Provide input to ensure that proposed designs are realistic and feasible within a Lean Manufacturing environment. Communicate challenges of current manufacturing processes and drive efforts to incorporate design for manufacturability and assembly concepts. Coordinate participation from peer experts to advise on manufacturability as necessary.
  • Recommend capital equipment additions and develop appropriate justifications. Effectively manage the implementation and commissioning of such additions.
  • Review production order closeout variances, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain positive work relationships with individuals in all organizational levels.
Qualifications
Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Solid interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence attitudes and behaviors.
  • Proficient in the use of PC based CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to read and interpret assembly diagrams and documents and explain to associates.
  • Proven ability to simultaneously and independently manage multiple tasks, solve technical problems, lead projects, and work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive execution of projects including the ability to identify and act upon potential improvements.
  • Excellent written, presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving and team-building skills.
  • Up to 5% travel may be required between U.S. facilities.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program.

This position will be considered at two different career levels based upon experience and education:

  • Level one (Staff I): 0 years of relevant industry experience
  • Level two (Staff II): 2 years of relevant industry experience
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering.
  • Previous intern or co-op experience, preferably in a manufacturing setting
  • Knowledge of the MSA Operating System and Lean Manufacturing Techniques (Value Stream Mapping, One Piece Flow, Setup Reduction, Lean Management, Visual Controls, etc.).
  • Six Sigma experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience with SAP, MS Project, AutoCAD, DraftSight.
