3M is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Specialist for its Old Hickory, TN site. The role focuses on providing process engineering support to drive Safety, Quality, Service, and Cost across manufacturing operations.

You will apply Lean Six Sigma practices and collaborate closely with production and maintenance to resolve downtime and optimize processes. Ideal candidates have a strong engineering background, seven years of advanced manufacturing experience, and a valid driver's license, with a

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or related engineering field.
  • Seven years of advanced manufacturing experience in private, public, government or military environments.
  • Current, valid Driver’s License.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and five years in polymer extrusion, web handling, fiber spinning, and slitting (nice to have).

As a Manufacturing Engineering Specialist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Responsible for providing process engineering support to all areas of 3M Old Hickory’s manufacturing operations to drive Safety, Quality, Service, and Cost.
  • Monitoring and improving manufacturing operations using Lean Six Sigma tools and methodology (design of experiments, statistical process control, lean management system, kaizens, DMAIC).
  • Working closely with production and maintenance teams to perform troubleshooting activities and resolve equipment/downtime issues.
  • Drive understanding of key customer needs and monitors process capabilities.
  • Utilize project management skills to organize and execute projects.
  • Supporting self and peer technical growth via continuously learning and applying new skills.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Seven (7) years of advanced manufacturing experience in a private, public, government or military environment.
  • Current, valid Driver’s License.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Five (5) years technical experience in polymer extrusion, web handling, fiber spinning, and slitting.
  • Skills include the ability to work with and lead cross functional Teams, troubleshoot problems and self-motivating.
  • Use of continuous improvement methodologies (e.g. Lean Six Sigma) to provide impact through cost reduction programs, quality improvements, and safety of work environments.
  • Communicate written and verbally clearly and concisely and influence changes with operators as well as other plant employees and management team members.

Company Vehicle

This position requires driving a company vehicle, which will require pre-employment and ongoing review of motor vehicle history for candidates who are offered and hired for this position


Work location:

  • On-Site Old Hickory, TN (Nashville)

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
