Job summary

New Flyer seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to support lean manufacturing within assigned cells. You will implement and facilitate lean initiatives, manage ECNs, assign inventory locations, and train staff on standard work instructions and layouts.

You will collaborate across teams to uphold production readiness and continuous improvement. Candidates should hold a Bachelor's in engineering, have hands-on Lean/Six Sigma experience, and be adept at problem solving, paint preparation, and process

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Knowledgeable and hands-on experience in application of Lean and Six Sigma.
  • Experience working as an effective team player.
  • Understand different substrates and how to prepare each for paint application.
  • Base knowledge of sanding, body filler and taping for paint application.
  • Knowledge of paint application and equipment used.
  • Ability to troubleshoot paint-related issues.
  • Understand paint specifications and how to use orange peel and gloss meters.
  • Knowledge in the application of decals and root-causing issues.
  • Base knowledge of paint robotics is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations related to paint.

Responsibilities

  • Provide manufacturing engineering support within assigned manufacturing cells.
  • Work as a cell team member to achieve operational metrics and pursue remedial actions.
  • Maintain updates on manufacturing engineering tasks in the cell log.
  • Represent manufacturing engineering in daily cell meetings and weekly metrics meetings.
  • Design or specify equipment/tooling/racking to support manufacturing.
  • Review ECNs and support production implementation.
  • Assign default locators to parts within cells.
  • Create standard work instructions and train personnel on standards.
  • Update layouts and maps for plant, cell, inventory, and safety.
  • Specify and facilitate capital and equipment upgrades, installations, or modifications.
  • Implement lean initiatives (5S, value stream mapping, set-up reduction).
  • Promote continuous improvement and teamwork.
  • Lead or participate in SWAT meetings to resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Conduct process observations to ensure fair time standards.

POSITION SUMMARY: Support all manufacturing engineering activities within assigned manufacturing cell(s) including implementing and facilitating lean manufacturing initiatives, communicating ECN’s, assigning inventory locations, conducting contract reviews, creating standard work instructions (SWI’s), evaluating standards, and completing capital and facility upgrades.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • · Provide manufacturing engineering support and services within assigned manufacturing cell(s).
  • · Work effectively as a cell team member to ensure operational metrics are achieved and any remedial action is actively pursued.
  • · Maintain current updates on manufacturing engineering related tasks on the manufacturing cell log.
  • · Represent manufacturing engineering within assigned cells at the daily cell meetings and weekly plant metrics meetings.
  • · Design or specify any equipment/tooling/racking required to support manufacturing.
  • · Review relevant engineering change notifications (ECNs) within assigned cells or assigned option groups and support all aspects of production implementation.
  • · Assign default locators to all parts within assigned manufacturing cells.
  • · Create standard work instructions and hot sheets and train the necessary personnel on those standards.
  • · Update and maintain layouts (plant & cell layouts and inventory, housekeeping, emergency, & security maps etc.)
  • · Specify and facilitate capital and equipment upgrades, installations or modifications.
  • · Implement and facilitate lean manufacturing initiatives (5S, value stream mapping, set-up reduction etc.)
  • · Promote an environment of continuous improvement and team work.
  • · Lead or participate in SWAT team meetings, ensuring that necessary action is taken between cross-functional groups to resolve issues.
  • · Conduct process observations to ensure that assigned time standards are fair and consistent.
  • · Maintain necessary resource plans for ensuring production activities are properly resourced.
  • · Validate routings and submit and implement routing change requests to process planning where appropriate.
  • · Conduct contract reviews prior to contract start to ensure production preparedness.
  • · Participate in Non- Conforming Parts (NCP) meetings as assigned, to assist with the disposition of non-conforming materials.
  • · Initiate engineering change requests (ECRs) where appropriate.
  • · Support process planning and production engineering.
  • · Participate in internal and outside Supplier Application Approvals and audits, as required.
  • · Communicate Engineering Change Notification (ECN) to Quality Assurance and Production per ECN Process.
  • · Liaison between Product Engineering and Production.
  • · Provide pre-production support, including, but not limited to, organizing and leading pre-production meetings, and reviewing pre-production information packets and addressing issues as needed.
  • · Other duties as assigned.
  • · Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
