Manufacturing Engineer (Machining)

THE SHORT VERSION
We build the machinery that moves ships. Steel plate comes in the door, and we burn it, fit it, weld it, and machine it into finished components that run 40,000 pounds and up for the commercial marine, defense, and mining industries.
We need a Manufacturing Engineer on the machining side — horizontal boring mills, large lathes, and everything that surrounds them. This is a hands-on job. You will be in the office when you need to be and on the floor the rest of the time, with the machines and the people running them.
We are not looking for someone to keep the process running the way it has always run. We have been at this since 1960, and some of what we do is proven and some of it is just old. We want an engineer who can tell the difference — who asks why we do it this way, goes and finds a better method, brings in the technology that makes it possible, and then does the work to make it stick.
WHY YOU WOULD WANT THIS JOB
- Real ownership. Manufacturing Engineering is a team of six. Nobody is going to hand you a narrow slice of one process and tell you to stay in it.
- The parts are enormous. 40,000 pounds and up, low volume, high mix. Every job is a real engineering challenge, and a scrapped part is a big deal — which is exactly why the work matters.
- The work is real. Intercon has been building heavy equipment in Riverside since 1958. Our ATB couplers hold ocean-going tug-and-barge units together in open water and account for half of all US fuel movement by ocean. Our propulsion equipment supports U.S. Navy destroyers, aircraft carriers, and submarines.
- Stability. Nearly 70 years in business, approximately 125 people, and a large backlog in marine and defense.
- You can actually change things. Bring us a better method, a new piece of technology, or a process that should be retired, make the case, and you will get a real hearing. We are small enough that a good idea does not have to survive several layers of approval to happen.
- First shift, and it does not rotate.

WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE DOING
Owning the machining processes end to end — how the part gets made, how we prove it is right, and how we make it repeatable. In practice, that means:
- CNC programming. Developing, modifying, and reviewing G-code for horizontal boring mills, lathes, and other heavy equipment
- Machine characterization and optimization. Finding out what a machine can actually hold, then building the process around it
- Process documentation and control. PFMEAs, process control plans, work instructions, and engineering and process change control
- Tooling and equipment. Specifying tooling and equipment for efficient, high-quality production, and identifying capital purchases worth making
- Mechanical drawings in support of new and existing products
- Root cause and corrective action. Supporting investigations with your peers and leading the effort to cut scrap, rework, repair, and warranty cost
- Standard work. Creating it, training it, and driving it across shop floor processes
- Finding and bringing in what is next. Watching what is happening in tooling, workholding, automation, probing, metrology, and software, then deciding what is worth trialing here — and building the business case to get it in the door
- Floor layouts and implementation plans for major factory moves
- Technical support across the value stream, working directly with production, quality, suppliers, and customers
You will often lead cross-functional groups of peers from production and quality to get a job out the door on time. Nobody on that team reports to you, so a consistent, analytical, show-your-work approach to decisions is how you get traction.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, with experience in a manufacturing function
- Ability to read and interpret complex drawings
- Thorough understanding of GD&T
- Experience programming CNC controls using G-code
- Real experience with machining, part setup, cutting tools, and materials
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Comfortable working with minimal supervision — you will be trusted to set your own priorities
- A real bias toward improvement. “That is how we have always done it” should bother you, and you should be the kind of engineer who goes looking for the better way instead of waiting to be asked.
- Strong interpersonal skills. You will be talking to suppliers, customers, machinists, and engineers, often on the same day.
If you are early in your career, apply anyway. You will notice there is no years-of-experience number on that list, and that is on purpose. A new engineer with a real work ethic, the humility to learn from the machinist who has been running that boring mill for thirty years, and the drive to keep asking why will go further here than a long résumé that stopped being curious a decade ago. Internship or co-op time in a manufacturing environment counts. Tell us what you have built, fixed, or figured out.
