Job summary

Applied Composites, a leading supplier of complex aerospace composite components, is hiring a Manufacturing Engineer 2. The role focuses on developing manufacturing methods, tooling, and processes for aerospace hardware, while estimating labor from historical data and coordinating material procurement.

The engineer will oversee projects from design to delivery, support operations with process troubleshooting, and contribute to design changes and process improvements in a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
• 3–5 years of aerospace manufacturing experience.
• Ability to read 2D drawings with GD&T knowledge.
• Experience with composite materials processing: hand lay-up, vacuum bagging, adhesives.
• Ability to develop manufacturing processes and tooling.
• Strong Excel and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop manufacturing methods, tooling details, and equipment specs for current and new programs.
• Develop Engineering BOMs and estimate labor hours from historical data.
• Coordinate with buyers to obtain materials and tooling.
• Create and support Manufacturing Readiness Review packages for first parts.
• Develop manufacturing plans and detailed work instructions for fabrication.
• Evaluate alternative materials/processes to improve properties and reduce costs.
• Oversee engineering builds from start to finish to ensure on-time delivery.
• Provide engineering support to Operations, troubleshoot processes, run tests, and aid in design changes.

Applied Composites (AC) is seeking anEngineer 2, Manufacturingwho will work within a multi-functional environment to support the manufacturing of mission critical aerospace hardware. The ME works to create tooling methodologies, develop new manufacturing processes, and solve composite manufacturing challenges. The Engineer must have a skilled understanding fiber-reinforced composite material processing, aerospace part manufacturing techniques, composites material performance characteristics, and the equipment used to manufacture and test composite parts.

Job Accountabilities:

• Develop manufacturing methods and processes, tooling details, and equipment specifications for current and new development programs
• Develop engineering Bill of Materials and estimate labor hours using historical data
• Work with company buyers to obtain raw material and specialty tooling necessary to complete the manufacturing tasks
• Creation and support of Manufacturing Readiness Review packages prior to first-part builds
• Develop manufacturing plans and detailed work instructions necessary for hardware fabrication
• Evaluate alternative composite materials and processes that improve component properties, reduce costs, and increase efficiency by performing trade studies and testing
• Oversee and contribute to engineering build projects from start to finish, ensuring that the project is executed on time
• Provide ongoing engineering assistance to the Operations department including troubleshooting of process operating problems, conducting special tests, developing reports, providing technical assistance, and aiding in design modifications

Job Specifications:
Education: Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations
Years’ Experience: 3-5 years of experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
Skills:

• Demonstrates competency in the processing of composite materials, including hand lay-up, vacuum bagging techniques, adhesive bonding, and assembly
• Ability to read and interpret customer specifications and 2D engineering drawings with an in-depth knowledge of GD&T; and the ability to interrogate 3D CAD models to extract all engineering requirements
• Experience with process development planning including deconstruction of all relevant engineering requirements, creating engineering bill of materials (BOMs), developing manufacturing process flows, identifying tooling solutions, and estimating labor hours through all phases of the manufacturing process
• Experience defining or designing tooling requirements for lay-up molds and mandrels, trim & drill fixtures, manufacturing aids, and specialty hand tools used in fabrication of complex composite structures.
• Strong Microsoft Excel user
• Excellent writing and communication skills with ability to create clear and succinct presentations and reports to communicate processes and project results with internal and external customers
• Ability to write clear and conforming work instructions
• Knowledge of standard aerospace industry specifications and practices
• Proficient in the manipulation of 3D part definition using CAD software
• Experience in development & optimization of composite flat patterns using FiberSim ply generation software is a plus
