Job summary

Rockford Ball Screw is seeking a Manual Machinist to operate and maintain manual mills and lathes with precision. The role requires the ability to read drawings, set up machines, and troubleshoot to minimize downtime.

You will work 40+ hours weekly with potential overtime and a focus on quality and safety. Candidates should have at least 3 years of experience, a HS diploma or equivalent, and proficiency with basic measuring tools.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• 3+ years’ experience operating manual lathes/mills.
• High School Diploma/GED or significant relevant work experience.
• Average level of computer literacy.
• Capable of using measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers.

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and adjust manual mills/lathes to meet tolerances.
• Interpret route sheets and drawings to complete orders.
• Inspect parts with calipers and micrometers for accuracy.
• Troubleshoot and collaborate to minimize downtime.
• Record production data in ERP systems and track output.
• Support continuous improvement to reduce setup times and improve quality.
• Flex across departments to meet production needs.

Summary/Objective

The Manual Machinist is responsible for operating and maintaining manual equipment such as the manual Lathes and/or Mills with skill and expertise. This role requires versatility in running multiple machines and demonstrates proficiency in troubleshooting and optimizing equipment performance.

Essential Functions

• Set up, operate, and perform advanced adjustments manual mills/lathes, ensuring equipment is calibrated to meet precise production requirements.
• Interpret route sheets and/or parts drawings to complete orders.
• Inspect product throughout the production process using precision tools such as calipers and micrometers to ensure they meet required tolerances to ensure they meet company and customer specifications.
• Troubleshoot collaborate with other departments to resolve complex CNC machine issues, using in-depth knowledge of machinery to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.
• Record production data and machine performance in ERP systems, ensuring accurate tracking of materials, adjustments, and output.
• Identify, document, and implement continuous improvement techniques to reduce setup times, improve production rates, machining methods, quality, and safety.
• Flex across various departments within the facility to support business needs and maintain efficient production workflow.
• Utilize powered equipment such as, lifts and cranes, as necessary to lift raw materials in production areas.
• Follow all safety protocols, ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
• Any/all other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves frequent lifting of materials and product up to 50 pounds and seldom lifting to 75lbs. Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle and/or adjust equipment. Moderate reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, and grasping. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to safety glasses, and steel toed work boots or shoes.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position at 40+ hours per week. Part-time available as well. Days and hours of work will be determined by management. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday eight (8) hours per day. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work may be required to meet business demands.

Required Education And Experience

• Must be 18 years or older.
• 3+ years’ experience operating manual lathes/mills machine
• High School Diploma/GED equivalent or significant relevant work experience.
• Average level of computer literacy.
• Capable of using measuring instruments, i.e. micrometer, calipers, gages, etc.
• Capable of using all required hand tools.
• Ability to read/write, perform basic arithmetic, and follow verbal and written instructions.

Preferred Experience

• Knowledge and experience with Kent and Lagan manual machines.
• Overhead Crane experience

Compensation

Our current hiring pay range for this position is $22-$28/per hour. This hiring pay range is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and, in some instances, may include education, work experience, knowledge, skills and certifications.

In addition to this base pay, Rockford Ball Screw employees are eligible for a bonus. Depending on your position you may be categorized into different tiers in the quarterly or annual bonus plan. Currently, this position is classified as a Quarterly Bonus within the Individual Contributor tier.
