Job summary

ProStaff Workforce Solutions is seeking a Manual Machinist to join a leading company in North Charleston, SC. The role is contract-to-hire with a pay rate of $25-35/hr on 2nd shift (3:00 pm – 11:30 pm) plus overtime.

You will set up and operate manual machines to produce precision components with strict tolerances. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED and 5–10 years of related experience, with ability to read blueprints and work from engineering drawings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 5–10 years of related machining experience preferred.
• Experience maintaining tolerances in precision components (0.001 inches).
• Ability to read/interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.

Responsibilities

• Set up, adjust, and operate various machine tools to produce precision parts.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
• Machine parts from metal and maintain tooling.
• Ensure proper setup of fixtures, tooling, and materials for machines.
• Use gauges and precision instruments to meet tolerance requirements.
• Work overtime as needed in evenings or weekends.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Contract-to-Hire

Pay Rate: $25-35/hr

Shifts: 2nd shift - 3 pm - 11:30 pm plus OT

Machinists set up and operate manual machines to confidently produce high-quality components with accuracy and efficiency. Machinists should be familiar with manually controlled machines and benchwork in the fabrication, maintenance, repair and alteration of machinery, machine parts, tools, and equipment.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions

• Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints and follow instructions
• Machine parts out of metal
• Properly and safely select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
• Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, fixtures, and tooling
• Must be able to determine the proper tools required to perform given task
• Operate and utilizes lifting aids as necessary to perform work
• Use gauges and precision measuring instruments to meet tolerance requirements
• Perform daily, regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment
• Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner while maintaining safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
• Work overtime as needed on evenings and/or weekends
• Communicates with others to coordinate work in plant
• Other duties as assigned

Preferred Machining Skills

• Familiarity with the use of: Heavy Duty Horizontal Lathes, Milling Machines, Horizontal Boring Mills, Vertical Turning Lathes, Planers, Grinders, Drill Presses, Hydraulic Presses, Band Saws, and Portable Tools
• Turning, Drilling, Tapping, Boring, Honing, Polishing machine processes
• Large part machining experience preferred (ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear, etc.)
• In-place machining experience is desired
• Forklift and Crane experience preferred

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• 5 to 10 years of related experience is preferred.
• Have experience with maintaining 0.001" tolerances
• Basic understanding of G, D, and T
• Have experience in job setup on vertical and horizontal machining centers and turning centers
• Language skills - effectively communicate and understand job instructions verbally and written in English. Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions to other employees in a professional and respectful manner
• Ability and willingness to learn
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
• A strong, proven interest in engineering and mechanical systems
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints
• Ability to read precision measuring tools
• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
• Ability to work independently and as part as a team
• Basic understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel

Physical Demands

• Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. at a time when required
• While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach overhead with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, and use stairs
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
• The employee will also be expected to spend time using a computer
