Job summary

Avail Staffing is seeking skilled Inside Machinists with strong experience in fabricating, maintaining, and repairing machinery and components per blueprints and specifications. This role is in a shipyard setting and requires setting up and operating machine tools with accuracy.

You will read blueprints, set up lathes/milling machines, perform machining operations, inspect parts with precision tools, and collaborate with engineers to ensure quality and on-time fabrication.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating manual or CNC lathes/milling machines.
  • Strong reading of blueprints, technical drawings, and shop documents.
  • Proficiency in setup, operation, and inspection of machining tools.
  • Experience with both small and large steel fabrication and assembly.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints and specifications to determine machining requirements.
  • Set up and operate machine tools (lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders).
  • Machining operations, measure dimensions, and verify tolerances.
  • Inspect parts with micrometers, calipers, and depth mics.
  • Prepare CFRs and document conditions found during inspection.
  • Collaborate with engineers and production staff to resolve issues.
  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment and report hazards.

Job description

Position Summary

Avail Staffing is seeking skilled Inside Machinists with strong experience in fabricating, maintaining, and repairing machinery and components per blueprints and specifications. Must be capable of setting up and operating various machine tools, working independently, and ensuring quality and precision in all tasks. This position will be in a shipyard setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, manuals, and specifications to determine machining requirements.
  • Set up and operate machine tools including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, jig borers, and boring machines.
  • Perform machining operations, verify dimensions and tolerances, and adjust machines as needed.
  • Measure and inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, depth mics, and other precision tools.
  • Select and secure fixtures, tools, attachments, and standard materials for machining.
  • Conduct assembly of machined parts and test operation to ensure functionality.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform minor maintenance.
  • Collaborate with engineers and production personnel to resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment and report safety concerns immediately.
  • Complete comprehensive Condition Found Reports (CFRs).
  • Perform threading operations and ensure accurate gauging.
  • Use hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks.
  • Work independently or as part of a team on various fabrication projects.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating manual or CNC lathes/milling machines.
  • Strong understanding of shop math, mechanics, and material machinability.
  • Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and trade documents.
  • Skilled in setup, operation, and inspection of machining tools.
  • Proficient with precision measurement instruments and inspection techniques.
  • Experience with both small and large steel assembly and heavy fabrication.
  • Ability to write detailed condition reports and perform minimal CNC program edits.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must supply own tools and maintain regular, dependable attendance.
