Overview

First Citizens Middle Market Banking delivers a range of financial solutions to midsize clients through a relationship banking model. The business offers deposit solutions, loans, treasury services, and other banking products to manufacturers, distributors, and a wide variety of service industries.

The Managing Director, Head of Underwriting & Portfolio Management for Middle Market Banking is responsible for leading and developing the department. This role involves creating business strategies to enhance service capabilities, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance, as well as developing and implementing best practices. The position requires establishing strong partnerships, developing initiatives, and providing leadership on processes, systems, and policies.

Responsibilities
  • Possess strong middle market finance experience with both privately-held and public companies, including credit analysis, financial modeling, structuring, and deal terms. Ability to communicate credit recommendations to senior management.
  • Manage Middle Market Banking (MMB) Underwriting & Portfolio Management activities and personnel.
  • Collaborate with the MMB Business Unit Head, Relationship Managers, and Credit Partners to evaluate and assess prospective credit opportunities.
  • Coordinate with key partners such as the MMB Relationship Specialist team, Lending Middle Office, and others for deal closing and client activities.
  • Oversee deal vetting, structuring, approval, and closing processes, including post-close modifications and monitoring.
  • Lead the underwriting process from initial discussions through closing, working closely with various teams.
  • Participate in credit approval meetings and propose revisions to credit standards as needed.
  • Advise leadership on adverse borrower developments and manage portfolio reviews, audits, and exams.
  • Interface with borrowers, agents, third-party intermediaries, and regulatory agencies.
  • Travel to regional teams 2-3 times per year and ensure professional development and training for colleagues.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of experience in Credit Analysis, Portfolio Management, Credit Underwriting, or Risk Management, OR a High School Diploma or GED with 14 years of similar experience.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or an MBA.
  • Completed courses relevant to financial analysis.
  • 15+ years of Middle Market or Mid-Corporate Banking UW & PM experience.
  • Effective leadership experience across multiple locations.
  • Completion of formal credit training programs.
  • 10+ years of banking experience at a Large Financial Institution.
