Job Description

The Managing Counsel, Claims role is an in-house position within the Law Department's Claims Matter Counseling (CMC) team, part of the broader Business Law & Compliance Property Liability practice group. Its mission is to protect the Company and support the Business by providing legal advice across the insurance spectrum to the Property Liability units, including Claims.

The CMC team primarily advises Claims Department frontline staff and leaders on non-litigation claim matters to mitigate risks of bad faith and extracontractual exposure, and to control outside counsel costs.

This role involves providing legal advice on complex coverage issues, attorney conditional demands, and other legal questions during claims handling that are not in litigation. It will collaborate closely with other teams within the Law Department to advise the Claims Organization and other business units.

The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of relevant experience in insurance defense or coverage, either in a law firm or in-house legal department. They should possess excellent communication, interpersonal skills, sound judgment, strong research and writing abilities, and an eagerness to be part of a dynamic company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice to the Claims Department on issues such as coverage opinions, conditional demand responses, large losses, releases, rejected tenders, multiple claims, new laws, or court decisions relevant to the assigned states.
  • Advise on complex claims and large losses with potential extracontractual or bad faith exposure to facilitate resolution.
  • Train and educate the Claims Organization on emerging legal trends, risks, and legal developments relevant to assigned states.
  • Collaborate with business and legal teams to develop and implement claims handling strategies.
Education
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing in the practicing state
  • 7+ years of experience (preferred)
Functional Skills
  • Project management
  • Ability to interact with all levels and supervise/mentor junior staff
  • Expertise to coach and guide less experienced team members
  • Proficiency with MS Office and LexisNexis or similar tools
  • Coverage analysis and complex attorney demand experience across jurisdictions (preferred)
  • Experience with insurance defense, extracontractual, or bad faith litigation is a plus but not required
Supervisory Responsibilities

This role does not include supervisory duties.

Notes: This description is not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned. Regular attendance is essential.
