Job Title: Managing Counsel

Reports To: CEO

Position Summary

A growing, boutique business law firm with a global clientele seeks a Managing Counsel to assume a key leadership role responsible for day-to-day supervision of the firm’s legal work across multiple practice areas. This attorney will play an integral role in setting standards and policies for legal performance, establishing budgets, tracking metrics, mentoring team members, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, business-focused legal services.

The Managing Counsel will also serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, providing guidance on legal risks and opportunities. This role requires someone with a strong network in the law practice industry, practical leadership skills, a keen growth-mindset, a high degree of emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills, and experience with at least one of the four major practice areas of the firm: Intellectual Property, Corporate & M&A, Employment & Workforce, and Litigation & Disputes.

The firm positions itself as a Fractional Legal Department for Growing Businesses, and those with prior experience as outside general counsel or as inhouse counsel are encouraged to apply, as are others with demonstrated management experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day delivery of legal services across the firm.

  • In coordination with the CEO and COO, set standards, KPIs, and processes for how legal work is performed.

  • Supervise, mentor, and support attorneys, practice chairs, and paraprofessionals.

  • Ensure that competent legal counsel and representation is provided on complex corporate, M&A, employment, IP, and litigation matters.

  • Ensure compliance with all of the firm’s legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinate with the COO in recruiting and hiring lateral hires, including practice chairs.

  • Maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and high-quality service.

  • As needed, provide direct support on legal deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school.

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of senior-level legal experience.

  • Licensure: Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

  • Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven expertise in at least one of the firm’s core practice areas: Intellectual Property, Corporate & M&A, Employment & Workforce, or Litigation & Disputes.

  • Demonstrated leadership in supervising attorneys, practice chairs, and legal teams, with a focus on mentoring and professional development.

  • Strong ability to design and implement standards, KPIs, and processes that drive high-quality, efficient legal services.

  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and advisory skills, with the ability to counsel CEOs and executives on legal risks and business opportunities.

  • Skilled in managing complex, high-stakes matters across corporate, employment, IP, and litigation practices.

  • High degree of emotional intelligence, business acumen, and a growth-mindset, enabling alignment of legal strategy with organizational goals.

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, manage firm-wide legal operations, and support talent recruitment and development.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation Range: $95,000 to $165,000 (including bonuses)
