POSITION : Managing Attorney – Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup

LOCATION : Ron Olson Justice Center

SALARY : $107,000 - $130,000 / annually DOE with excellent benefits

The Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup assists survivors of domestic violence with restraining orders and family law matters (divorce, paternity, custody, and support) in Los Angeles County. Attorneys work with clients through direct representation, court-based domestic violence clinics, community clinics, and virtual family law drafting appointments.

LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Managing Attorney – Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Active membership in the California State Bar;
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience practicing law, including client interviewing, legal research, writing, drafting, negotiation, law and motion, discovery techniques, and trial and appellate work;
  • Knowledge of family law and community legal needs;
  • Commitment and sensitivity to serving domestic violence survivors;
  • Willingness to assume responsibility quickly;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks with attention to detail;
  • Experience in legal services programs preferred;
  • Comfort with hybrid office environments, using Teams and Zoom to engage remotely;
  • Ability to supervise legal staff engaged in direct services, policy advocacy, transactional work, or litigation;
  • Willingness to work beyond standard hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed;
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels of the organization;
  • Experience mentoring attorneys, paralegals, or law clerks;
  • Ability to work as part of a management team;
  • Commitment to promoting anti-racism;
  • Experience managing grants and preparing reports preferred;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain positive relations with diverse populations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

  • Oversee approximately ten staff members within the Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup;
  • Manage operations of domestic violence clinics at Toll and Long Beach courthouses;
  • Lead the Family Law Coalition and represent LAFLA at community partner meetings;
  • Identify and pursue policy remedies for domestic violence victims in family law;
  • Coordinate with the Director of Community and Economic Justice to align work with the organization’s mission and work plan;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Racial Justice and Equity on addressing systemic barriers faced by survivors;
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and set standards for staff;
  • Ensure grant compliance, compile reports, respond to audits, and maximize grant outcomes, including for the CalWORKs grant;
  • Participate in resource development and pursue funding opportunities;
  • Ensure regulatory compliance on cases reported to funders;
  • Collaborate with other Managing Attorneys to meet organizational goals;
  • Arrange training opportunities for staff in relevant legal areas;
  • Conduct case review meetings to ensure high-quality legal services aligned with organizational priorities and policies.
