A leading Am Law firm in Los Angeles seeks a Managing Attorney – Regional to lead the Managing Attorney’s Office (MAO). This senior role blends substantive litigation and appellate work with operations leadership and personnel oversight across offices.

You will advise attorneys on litigation procedures, supervise MAO staff, manage docketing and calendaring, and drive efficiency through data, analytics, and AI tools while collaborating with courts, vendors, and business teams.

Qualifications

  • JD required and admitted to practice in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state court systems, civil and appellate procedure.
  • Experience guiding attorneys on procedural strategy and calendaring.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience in a legal setting.
  • Proficient research, writing, and presenting skills; familiarity with major litigation databases.

Responsibilities

  • Research and interpret court rules and filing requirements across jurisdictions.

Job description

Our client (BigLaw) is currently seeking a Managing Attorney – Regional for a leading Am Law firm in Los Angeles. This is a senior-level opportunity within the Managing Attorney’s Office (MAO), combining substantive legal and procedural expertise with operational and team leadership.

The role will work closely with attorneys and case teams on litigation, appellate, arbitration, and regulatory matters while overseeing key MAO operations and personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise attorneys and case teams on litigation, appellate, arbitration, and regulatory procedure
  • Research and interpret federal, state, local, and judge-specific court rules, standing orders, and filing requirements
  • Provide guidance on procedural strategy, deadline calculations, calendaring, and court practices
  • Review filings and related materials for accuracy and procedural compliance
  • Oversee docketing, calendaring, court filings, court services, and service of process
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop MAO personnel
  • Coordinate staffing, workloads, resources, and coverage across offices
  • Develop and maintain procedural knowledge and experience-management resources
  • Leverage data, analytics, legal technology, and emerging AI tools to improve efficiency and service delivery
  • Collaborate with attorneys, business professionals, technology teams, vendors, courts, and other stakeholders
  • Support departmental initiatives, resource planning, and long-term MAO strategy

What Client is Looking For

  • JD required
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state court systems, civil and appellate procedure, filing requirements, and court practices
  • Experience providing practical procedural guidance to attorneys or litigation teams
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience
  • Strong research, writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Experience with litigation research and court platforms such as PACER, Bloomberg Law, or Lex Machina is a plus
  • Familiarity with automated docketing/calendaring systems such as CourtAlert or comparable platforms is a plus
  • Interest in leveraging AI and emerging legal technology to improve legal and operational workflows
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and time-sensitive matters in a fast-paced environment
