Summary

The Manager, Veterinary Services will co‑manage systems, processes, and communication of the Medical Branch at the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC). The role ensures efficient delivery of veterinary care, optimizes workflows, and facilitates clear communication with other departments to support overall success.

About the Center

The ASPCA’s Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, NC, is dedicated to rehabilitating and studying extremely fearful, under‑socialized dogs. The team improves these dogs’ quality of life and prepares them for adoptive homes through intensive behavioral interventions and integrative care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee communication, record‑keeping, and logistics for the Medical Branch.
  • Support the Senior Director, Veterinary Services and work concurrently with another Manager, Veterinary Services.
  • Assist in examinations, treatments, monitoring of animals, and diagnostic testing.
  • Provide husbandry tasks, observe and report signs of illness or injury, perform data entry, and administer medications.
  • Coordinate veterinary care, schedule examinations, transport animals to appointments, and manage follow‑up care.
  • Assist with humane euthanasia and, upon certification, perform euthanasia independently.
  • Handle controlled substances under veterinary supervision and communicate medical information to Behavior and Operations teams.
  • Maintain a safe and compassionate environment using low‑stress handling techniques.
Operations & Administrative Support
  • Manage Medical Department communications, alone or with the other Manager, Veterinary Services.
  • Coordinate with Operations and Behavior branches; participate in cross‑departmental meetings and daily rounds.
  • Enter accurate data into medical records and update records for animals discharged for placement.
  • Maintain cleanliness of medical areas, order supplies, and ensure adherence to SOPs and OSHA protocols.
  • Develop and update written medical materials with the Senior Director.
  • Assist with behavior interventions and daily animal care during staffing shortages.
  • Provide support for learning‑lab retreats, eLearning, and online forums.
  • Serve as rotating manager on duty, point of contact for staff, volunteers, and facilities.
  • Use appropriate PPE and promote its use across teams.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Senior Director.
Qualifications
  • Accurately observe and interpret animal behavior and welfare.
  • Skillfully restrain and handle animals using low‑stress techniques.
  • Confidence with technology; experience using multiple software applications; basic computer skills (email, Word, Zoom, Teams, Salesforce, OneNote).
  • Ability to cultivate a climate of respect and collaboration.
  • Display courage, determination, and empathy toward animals and colleagues.
  • Present innovative approaches to improve collaborative work.
  • Flexibility to attend mandatory staff meetings and training outside scheduled hours.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful motor‑vehicle history check.
  • Lifting capability: 35 lbs (16 kg) without assistance; higher weight with assistance; standing, bending, and climbing during shifts.
  • Comfort working with behaviorally compromised animals; ability to perform euthanasia after training.
  • Ability to apply healthy coping strategies for patient death.
  • Exemplify ASPCA’s core values and competencies; willingness to deploy with National Field Response team when scheduled.
Education & Work Experience
  • Degree of Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent from an AVMA CVTEA‑accredited program (or Canadian equivalent preferred).
  • RVTs must possess a valid North Carolina RVT license or be able to obtain one within 60 days of hire; otherwise, preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant or similar in small‑animal clinical practice or animal shelter; veterinary technician experience preferred.
  • North Carolina Certified Euthanasia Technician preferred; eligibility and willingness to obtain certification required.
  • Fear Free Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • High School Diploma (Required).
  • English (Required).
Work Schedule
  • On‑site role at the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center, Weaverville, NC.
  • Facility operating hours: 7:30 am – 6:00 pm; Medical staff hours routinely 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
  • 5 days a week, 8‑hour days, includes one weekend day.
  • Coverage of multiple holidays per year required.
  • Schedules are subject to change at the sole discretion of the ASPCA.
Compensation

Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs and internal equity.

Target hiring range (new hire offers only):

  • Non‑RVT: $28.25 – $30.25 per hour
  • RVT: $31.55 – $33.55 per hour

Maximum of the range reserved for candidates with highest qualifications; compensation may increase based on performance.
