Qualifications

  • 7 years’ experience as a sterile processing technician and three years of supervisory experience
  • Completion of two years of occupationally specific education or associate’s degree in a related field
  • Current certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or higher education in related field

Responsibilities

Job description

Position Summary:

The Manager, Sterile Processing, will be responsible for managing the 24/7 operations of the Sterile Processing Department. They will monitor inventory and utilization levels to ensure adequate availability of patient care and treatment materials. The Manager will develop and ensure conformance with policies and procedures related to the handling, sterilization, cleaning, maintenance, storage, and assembly of patient care supplies, equipment, and instruments.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Oversee development, implementation, and maintenance of internal policies and procedures for processing, storage, and handling of medical surgical and surgical supplies and equipment.

  • Develops and implement new and/or updated decontamination and sterilization methods as needed.

  • Establishes department goals and objectives.

  • Develops and maintains an organizational structure to support the required functions efficiently.

  • Evaluates service delivery systems and procedures and recommends changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Monitors usage of inventory establishes par levels, and initiates purchase of items as needed.

  • Evaluates, recommends, and assists in introduction of new instruments and materials.

  • Works with CPD/OR staff and/or other hospital departments to develop and maintain systems and procedures for tracking and distribution of processed instruments.

  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and practices in procurement, processing, and maintenance of medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies through participation in professional organizations and attendance at relevant continuing education programs.

  • Leads hospital and departmental committees and project teams as appropriate.

  • Administers the recruitment, evaluations, growth, and development of employees.

  • Oversee the scheduling assignments and training programs.

  • Follows through on disciplinary and other personnel actions as warranted.

  • Oversees in-services and continuing education programs for staff development in collaboration with the supervisor and single shift managers

  • Implements procedural change as needed to ensure compliance with hospital, department, and external policies, standards, and regulations.

  • Oversee and ensures completion of required quality monitoring and related data collection.

  • Maintains related records and prepares reports as necessary.

  • Oversee sterile processing on all shifts (24 hours), including oversight of all sterile processing FTEs with direct oversight of the single shift supervisors.

  • Manages the administration and maintenance of department recordkeeping systems, including highly sensitive and/or critical administrative and financial data.

  • Acts as a role model and initiates an effort to assure standards for customer satisfaction. Uses data collected to demonstrate that standards and quality improvement goals are met.


Knowledge and Skills:


  • The ability to effectively manage the employees within assigned unit/department.

  • Communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, or well-developed writing skills.

  • The ability to interact and coordinate with employees, vendors, surgeons, and nursing staff.


Education:


  • Completion of two years of occupationally specific education or associate’s degree

  • Area of study required: Surgical Technology, Central Process or a closely related field

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred


Experience:

7 years’ experience as a sterile processing technician and three years of supervisory experience






Licensure/ Certifications:

Current certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)
