Job description

Position Summary

The Sonographer Manager is a working leadership position responsible for overseeing the daily operations, quality assurance, and clinical performance of the ultrasound department while actively performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations.

This role provides leadership and supervision to all sonographers while maintaining an active clinical workload. The position includes four clinical days performing ultrasound examinations and one administrative day per week dedicated to departmental leadership, staff development, operational oversight, and program management.

The Sonographer Manager ensures imaging quality, compliance with AIUM standards, efficient scheduling and workflow, and effective collaboration with providers and clinic leadership.

Principal duties and responsibilities
  1. Oversee daily ultrasound department operations and workflow.
  2. Monitor ultrasound volumes, appointment utilization, and operational efficiency.
  3. Coordinate ultrasound coverage across clinic locations when necessary.
  4. Perform obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations according to practice protocols.
  5. Provide supervision and leadership to all ultrasound technologists.
  6. Assist in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and training sonographers.
  7. Conduct staff performance evaluations and competency assessments.
  8. Provide coaching and technical guidance to maintain imaging quality standards.
  9. Serve as the primary escalation point for ultrasound-related operational issues.
  10. Perform advanced imaging procedures including pelvic ultrasound, obstetric ultrasound, and specialized procedures when applicable.
  11. Review ultrasound schedule and prepare patient information prior to imaging.
  12. Obtain diagnostic images, measurements, and Doppler studies according to established clinical protocols.
  13. Generate ultrasound reports in 3c Careand ensure images transfer properly to the electronic medical record.
  14. Communicate preliminary findings or abnormal results to physicians as appropriate.
  15. Maintain ultrasound room cleanliness and probe sterilization between patients.
  16. Assist providers during ultrasound-guided procedures when required.
  17. Support clinic workflow by assisting with patient flow and imaging availability.
  18. Oversee ultrasound quality assurance programs and image quality review.
  19. Ensure compliance with AIUM accreditation standards and imaging protocols.
  20. Maintain ultrasound department policies and procedures.
  21. Ensure adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control standards.
  22. Serve as the primary contact for ultrasound equipment vendors.
  23. Coordinate equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  24. Evaluate equipment utilization and recommend technology upgrades when needed.
  25. Assist in implementing new imaging technologies or software systems.
  26. Develop and maintain ultrasound training protocols for new staff.
  27. Collaborate with physicians to ensure imaging protocols align with clinical standards.
Specific Job Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  1. Advanced knowledge of obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound imaging
  2. Strong leadership and staff management abilities
  3. Experience with Athena and 3c Careimaging software
  4. Strong organizational and operational management skills
  5. Excellent communication and training abilities
Position Requirements and Experience
  1. Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program
  2. RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer)
  3. CPR/BLS certification
  4. Minimum 5 years of OB/GYN or MFM ultrasound experience
  5. Minimum 4 years leadership experience preferred (Lead Sonographer, Supervisor, or Manager)
  6. Fetal Echo certification - Preferred
  7. Nuchal Translucency certification - Preferred
Physical Demands

Physical demands may include:

  1. Prolonged, extensive or considerable amount of standing/walking, and/or transferring patients.
  2. Light lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects.
  3. A considerable amount of reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  4. Traveling to all locations when emergency coverage demands.
Working Conditions

May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to pressure due to multiple add-on’s. This position is classified by OSHA as Category II.
