Job summary

Snap Inc. seeks an Engineering Manager for the Maps backend team to guide a talented group of engineers in delivering a highly available, scalable map service.

You will shape the roadmap, set technical direction, and collaborate with product, data science, and operations to ensure metric-driven delivery. You will mentor engineers, drive architecture decisions across infrastructure and product layers, and leverage AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining security and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 9+ years in software development, with leadership/technical lead experience.
  • Strong background in building high availability backend systems.

The breadth of Snapchat's audience makes it the most-used map outside of Google and Apple Maps, and this team owns the backend services and data infrastructure behind it, from friend location to places to the content that makes the map feel alive.What you'll do:Manage and mentor a team of backend engineers, in a fast-paced, quick-to-market environmentSet the strategy, build a roadmap, create measurable goals, and lead your team to deliverCollaborate with Product, Operation, Data Science and Engineering teams, and executive stakeholdersEvaluate the technical tradeoffs of major decisions and be a strong technical mentorHire, grow and retain high-performing team membersUtilize AI tools and high velocity engineering workflows to design and ship scalable services while upholding rigorous standards for code correctness, security, and production ready quality codeKnowledge, Skills & Abilities:Background with building high availability and mission critical backend systemsExperience with leading an engineering teamA track record on both sides of the infrastructure and product split: you have built platform or infrastructure that other teams depend on, and you have shipped user-facing features and been accountable for their metricsExperience building backend infrastructure and shipping user-facing product: you have built platform services other teams depend on, and you have owned features and the metrics they moveAbility leading and executing large, complex technical initiativesProficiency in, or a strong aptitude for, leveraging AI tools to streamline development, paired with the critical judgment to audit generated output for architectural integrity, performance bottlenecks, and security risks.Adaptability in learning and applying evolving AI systems and tools to remain at the forefront of engineering trends and modern development practicesMinimum Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field such as computer science or equivalent years of practical work experience9+ years of post-Bachelor's software development experience; or a Master's degree in a technical field + 8+ years of post-grad software development experience; or a PhD in a related technical field + 5+ years of post-grad software development experience1+ years of experience managing a team or acting as a technical leadExperience with distributed systems and backend service developmentPreferred Qualifications:Experience with geospatial or location-based systems, such as map data pipelines, place and POI data, routing, or spatial indexingFamiliarity with driving large scale initiatives from ideation to completionTrack record of delivery in rapidly changing, highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environmentsExperience with Ops-heavy systems/productsIf you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please don’t be shy and provide us some information ."Default Together" Policy at Snap: At Snap Inc. we believe that being together in person helps us build our culture faster, reinforce our values, and serve our community, customers and partners better through dynamic collaboration. These pay zones may be modified in the future.Zone A (CA, WA, NYC) :The base salary range for this position is $229,000-$343,000 annually.Zone B :The base salary range for this position is $218,000-$326,000 annually.Zone C :The base salary range for this position is $195,000-$292,000 annually.This position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs.
