Manager, Software Engineering - SoftWriters

More than a technology company.

Empower LTC Pharmacies. Save Lives. Build the Future of Healthcare Technology.

About SoftWriters

SoftWriters develops innovative IT solutions that empower long-term care (LTC) pharmacies to deliver life-saving medications more efficiently and accurately. As a voted top workplace in Pittsburgh, we combine meaningful work with a collaborative culture where your contributions directly impact patient care.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to join our growing technology organization and help shape the future of healthcare technology. In this role, you'll lead engineering teams responsible for modernizing and expanding our product portfolio while helping drive SoftWriters' transition to an agent-first, AI-enabled software development culture that delivers exceptional value to our customers.

Location: Hybrid - Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Reports to: Director, Software Engineering

What You'll Do
  • Lead multiple innovative technology projects and the teams that deliver them
  • Leverage your experience to hire and scale up engineering teams
  • Understand the business environment and work closely with other teams to efficiently drive team progress, and to ensure that projects align with strategic and tactical objectives
  • Provide recommendations regarding emerging trends, design requirements, best practices, and the utilization of advanced software development methods — including agentic and AI-assisted development approaches
  • Provide mentorship to team members in the delivery of clear, concise, and tested code
  • Support and guide Scrum practices, providing an excellent team experience
    • Facilitate collaboration amongst the team in delivering value each Sprint
    • Consistently deliver business value within forecasts
    • Partner with Scrum Masters and Product Owners in support of team member performance and development
    • Focus on increasing the level of quality in all aspects of product development
  • Lead your team through our evolution to an agent-first SDLC
    • Model active, hands-on use of our AI tooling (Cursor, Claude Code) rather than advocating from the sidelines
    • Coach engineers at every comfort level — from early adopters to those who need more support — toward genuine, sustained adoption
    • Identify where AI tooling changes how your team plans, reviews, tests, and ships, and help make that operational, not theoretical
    • Partner with the Director of Engineering to spot adoption friction on your team early and address it directly and supportively
  • Demonstrate an innovative spirit in continuously improving yourself, others, and our culture
    • Be energized by developing your own skillset — gain mastery of what you know, explore new languages, technologies, and techniques
    • Seek opportunities to broaden your scope of knowledge and stay current with industry and organizational trends
    • Actively seek feedback from colleagues and effectively incorporate changes into work and behaviors
    • Engage, educate, push, and have fun with your teammates daily
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Advanced software application design and development knowledge
  • A solid foundation in Computer Science, with strong competencies in data structures and algorithms
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Proven ability to take ownership of, and follow through on, escalated incidents requiring leadership attention until resolution is achieved
