Free Market Health in Pittsburgh is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead one or more software delivery teams and grow engineers while delivering impact on our healthcare platform.

You’ll coach teams, own performance cycles, recruit and onboard engineers, and partner with Product to balance features, reliability, and sustainable pace. You’ll still write code when needed and champion AI-assisted development.

• 8+ years in software engineering including 2+ years in leadership.

Our impact

At Free Market Health, our mission is to never let the process fail the patient. We build the platform that connects payers and specialty pharmacies and routes specialty medication referrals, so patients get the therapy they need. We're looking for an Engineering Manager who loves building great teams and helping engineers do the best work of their careers.

You’ll lead one or more software delivery teams. Your focus is people: hiring, coaching, growing, and supporting the engineers on your teams, and making sure they can deliver predictably. You’ll still write code and pick up project work to stay close to the platform, but your teams' commitments won't depend on it.

What You’ll Do

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of software engineers, including the team leads who guide day-to-day delivery.
• Hold regular 1:1s, set clear expectations, and give specific, timely feedback.
• Own the performance and development cycle for your team: goals, reviews, and career growth plans.
• Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard engineers who raise the bar.
• Build a team culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing.
• Partner with Product on planning, scope, and priorities, balancing new features, reliability, and a sustainable pace.
• Keep delivery on track: help the team break down work, spot risk early, and recover when something slips.
• Champion AI-assisted development and agentic coding across your teams, and give engineers time to improve the shared agents, skills, and tools they use every day.
• Hold the quality bar through design and code review.
• Take part in the triage and on-call rotation alongside your engineers, keep coverage scheduled, and follow through on what incidents surface.
• Contribute hands-on to projects, tooling, and improvements outside the critical delivery path.

What We’re Looking For

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years as an engineering manager, team lead, or tech lead.
• A track record of developing engineers and building healthy, high-performing teams.
• Experience leading Agile delivery and partnering with Product on roadmaps and planning.
• Enough technical depth to engage in architecture, design, and code review on a modern web and cloud stack.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or Claude Code, and the judgment to tell where they improve delivery and where they don't.
• Clear, direct communication with engineers, product partners, and business leaders.

Nice to Haves

• A track record of raising a team's proficiency with AI coding agents and establishing the practices that make them effective.
• Healthcare technology experience, especially specialty pharmacy, PBM, payer, or claims systems.
• Familiarity with HIPAA, HITRUST, or SOC 2 in a software environment.
• Experience with Python, React, SQL Server, or Microsoft Azure.
