Schedule: Monday–Friday | 6:00–6:15 AM start (must start no later than 6:30 AM)

Shift: 8-hour shifts

On-Call: Requires 24-hour accessibility by phone

Position Overview

The Operating Room Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Operating Room and perioperative services, including shared oversight of the Sterile Processing Department. This role provides hands‑on clinical and operational leadership to ensure high‑quality, safe, compassionate patient care while maintaining staffing, regulatory, and organizational standards.

The OR Manager will oversee approximately 80 FTEs, including nurses, surgical technicians, and other perioperative caregivers. This is a highly visible, hands‑on leadership position requiring the manager to be present in the OR, actively round, work directly with staff, and support daily surgical operations. This is not a desk‑only management position.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & OR Operations

• Oversee the daily operations of the Operating Room and perioperative services
• Provide hands‑on leadership and remain actively engaged in the OR through rounding, room visits, and direct interaction with caregivers
• Oversee a broad spectrum of surgical procedures, excluding trauma
• Ensure caregivers follow age‑specific standards, hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care
• Monitor compliance with medication administration and treatment/procedure standards
• Establish and maintain clinical standards of practice to promote safe, high‑quality patient care
• Address patient, family, physician, and caregiver concerns in a timely and appropriate manner
• Assist with the evaluation of department‑specific equipment and ensure staff competency in equipment operation
• Participate in Surgical Service Line growth opportunities
• Share oversight of the Sterile Processing Department with executive perioperative leadership
• Lead and manage approximately 80 FTEs, including nurses, surgical technicians, and other caregivers
• Manage staff performance and maintain high standards of patient care, professionalism, and workplace behavior
• Handle disciplinary actions and employee performance issues consistently, confidentially, and respectfully
• Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and development of staff
• Work with Human Resources and Education departments to support staffing and employee development
• Prepare and conduct monthly staff meetings
• Complete caregiver performance evaluations according to established timelines
• Facilitate staff participation in required and professional development education
• Ensure adequate staffing levels based on patient volume, physician needs, and service‑line growth
• Develop staffing plans and match resources to operational needs while minimizing premium pay and supporting productivity goals
• Adapt work schedules as needed to meet organizational demands

Scheduling, Payroll & Business Operations

• Manage staff scheduling and payroll
• Oversee staffing assignments and daily resource allocation
• Assist with operational and capital budget planning
• Make recommendations regarding capital equipment and operating budgets
• Manage supply ordering and inventory needs
• Develop, implement, and enforce departmental policies and procedures
• Ensure efficient use of time and resources throughout the department

Quality, Compliance & Patient Safety

• Ensure compliance with State, Federal, Joint Commission, and hospital standards
• Participate in compliance audits and assist with the development and revision of audit tools
• Support survey readiness initiatives
• Monitor quality‑control processes, including glucometer controls and code cart checks
• Work with Infection Control to identify department‑specific infection prevention needs and educational opportunities
• Monitor staff compliance with infection‑control standards
• Recognize and report signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect across all patient populations
• Establish processes for reporting and documenting unusual patient or administrative occurrences
• Complete required HRP reviews and documentation
• Support the use of SBAR and other approved communication tools
• Participate in quality improvement activities and identify opportunities for improvement or research

Education & Staff Development

• Assess staff learning needs based on patient populations and age groups
• Develop, implement, and evaluate patient education materials in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
• Assess and coordinate orientation and education requirements for caregivers
• Assist with annual organizational education programs
• Ensure staff maintain proficiency with department‑specific equipment and procedures
• Attend all mandatory department and hospital education programs
• Encourage ongoing professional development and evidence‑based nursing practice
• Develop effective communication processes for interdepartmental and inter‑agency reporting and follow‑up
• Maintain positive working relationships with medical staff, colleagues, caregivers, patients, and the community
• Supervise clerical functions and provide support to clerical staff when working with other departments
• Demonstrate accurate use of hospital computer information systems within departmental access guidelines
• Perform duties independently while following established hospital and departmental policies and procedures
• Demonstrate initiative and complete assigned responsibilities accurately and within required timelines

Required Qualifications

• Active/Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
• Ideally 5+ years of leadership experience within the Operating Room Candidates with a combination of OR leadership and leadership experience in another clinical unit may be considered
• Strong preference for candidates who have maintained a career focus within the OR/perioperative environment
• Strong experience managing OR nurses, surgical technicians, and other perioperative staff
• Experience with staffing, scheduling, performance management, and daily OR operations

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree preferred
• Previous experience within a Magnet‑recognized organization preferred
• Experience overseeing or working closely with Sterile Processing
• Experience with surgical service‑line growth and operational planning

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced OR Nurse Manager who is comfortable being highly visible and hands‑on in the operating room. They should have strong leadership and people‑management skills, be comfortable managing a large team, and have the clinical credibility to work directly alongside OR caregivers.
