Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a Sterile Processing Department Leader to manage staff, ensure compliance with Joint Commission, and oversee sterilization, labeling, storage, and delivery of instruments and supplies for the OR.

The role requires 3–4 years supervisory experience in sterile processing, CRCST and CSPDT certifications, and strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to drive quality and safety in perioperative services.

About the Job
General Summary of Position

Manages the activities of the hospital's Sterile Processing Department personnel regarding preparation packaging handling decontamination sterilization stocking and delivery of sterile and non-sterile supplies instrumentation and equipment. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws regulations policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Selects trains orients and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance evaluates performance and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs provide feedback discuss new developments and exchange information.
  • Completes annual performance appraisals in a timely manner ensuring that the appraisals reflect the individual's ability to meet performance expectations. Counsels associates effectively and collaborates with the AVP Perioperative Services and Human Resources to utilize the disciplinary process.
  • Develops implements and ensures compliance with department goals objectives policies and procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Develops and recommends department operating and capital budget. Ensures the department operates within the determined budget.
  • Directs the requisitioning sorting labeling and issuing of equipment and instrumentation. Oversees and maintains an instrument tracking system. Creates and disseminates reports as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing for the department. Ensures unit activities flow smoothly.
  • Establishes and oversees methods for preparing handling and storing sterile equipment and materials in collaboration with Risk Management Infection Prevention and the Operating Room. Maintains records as required by the Joint Commission. Ensures proper case cart preparation handling and timely delivery to the Operating Room in collaboration with Materials Management.
  • Investigates and follows through on customer complaints.
  • Maintains inventory records and submits requisitions to ensure that adequate supply and instrument levels are kept on hand.
  • Oversees and ensures proper sterilization assembly and storage of medical supplies instrumentation and equipment. Conducts monthly department meetings and in-service for new equipment and instruments. Identifies individual staff development needs and provides appropriate resources to meet the needs.
  • Supervises the maintenance and preparation of records files and other documents as required by regulatory bodies.
  • Exemplifies Patient Experience service standards SPIRIT Values service line philosophy mission and values and actively participates in Patient Quality and Safety standards and tasks.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and business unit in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field preferred
Experience
  • 3-4 years Supervisory experience in sterile processing or equivalent sterile processing technician experience; required and
  • Experience with sterilizers surgical instruments medical supplies and preparation of various trays of instruments for surgical procedures. required
  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CRCST - Certified and Registered Central Service Technician CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification required or
  • CSPDT - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Tech CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) certification required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Business acumen and leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management internal departments and external agencies.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
