Job description

Role is 3 days on-site in either their San Mateo or Salt Lake City office

This role is 75% management, 25% individual contributions

The Data Science team supports a wide spectrum of business domains including user experience personalization (e.g., consumer recommendations), forecasting and optimization of advertising campaigns, anomaly detection/alerting, etc. The scope of our work is broad and still expanding. As a Data Science Manager, you will have the opportunity to develop and deploy solutions to challenging, practical business problems. Your work will improve the experience of our members and impact the business bottom line.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders to clarify and refine the definition of business problems.
  • Lead the translation of business problems into machine learning problems, including ML problem formulation and evaluation metric specification.
  • Meet regularly with direct reports, coaching them on project definition and execution.
  • Perform employee evaluations and guide direct reports in career development.
  • Develop and maintain DS/ML project plans.
  • Lead status and technical reviews.
  • Adapt project execution, balancing technical, cost, and schedule considerations.
  • Facilitate regular progress reporting to stakeholders.
  • Maintain technical documentation, develop/deliver demos and presentations.
  • This is a hands-on role leading a small team. A portion of your time will be devoted to individual contribution including all phases of development such as model selection, feature engineering, offline experimentation, deployment, testing, and maintenance.
  • This is a product-oriented team. You will balance the need for short-term product solutions with the desire for longer-term sophistication.

  • Strong people-management and organizational skills.
  • Very strong SQL skills.
  • Experience with big data and machine learning frameworks. Python/sklearn/pytorch strongly preferred.
  • Practical experience with multiple ML problem types (supervised/unsupervised, classification/regression, RL experience is a plus).
  • Very strong communication skills, including written communication.
  • Strong problem solving and collaboration skills.
  • Firm understanding of statistics and A/B test fundamentals.
  • Deep learning/NN experience is a plus.
  • Experience with NLP and GenAI is a plus.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Masters or PhD degree in AI/ML, computer science, statistics, physics, applied mathematics or related field.
  • 5+ years industry experience applying machine learning methods to solve real-world problems.
  • 2+ years industry experience in people-management role; preferably in data science.
  • Experience in ad-tech and/or consumer services is desirable but not essential.
