Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ seeks a Manager Of Compensation to lead administration and delivery of compensation programs in alignment with HR policies and collective bargaining agreements. Under the Director of Total Rewards, this role partners with HR leadership to develop strategies that fit budgets and operations.

You will oversee salary surveys, job descriptions, and union wage programs, supervise staff, and support negotiation efforts with unions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with 5+ years in compensation/administration and labor relations.
  • Experience with unionized healthcare, public-sector, or academic medical center environment preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel and database applications; familiarity with compensation benchmarking and market analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain compensation policies, procedures, programs, and forms under senior leadership.
  • Oversee position control, job classification, and market reviews with equity recommendations.
  • Manage competency-based job descriptions and maintain the library for Joint Commission compliance.

Manager Of Compensation

Newark, NJ | Full Time | Human Resources Department

About The Role

The Administrator Compensation manages the administration and delivery of compensation programs and services at University Hospital, ensuring alignment with hospital and Human Resources policies, practices, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Under the direction of the Director of Total Rewards, Compensation and Leaves Management, this role partners closely with HR leadership, management, and staff to develop and implement compensation strategies that support organizational goals, budgetary constraints, and operational needs. The role also supports labor relations efforts by assisting with the negotiation, interpretation, and implementation of collective bargaining agreements with unions representing University Hospital employees.

Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
  • Under the direction of the Director of Total Rewards, Compensation, and Leaves Management, manages the development, implementation, and maintenance of compensation-related policies, procedures, programs, and forms.
  • Oversees the Banner position control function and job classification and reclassification processes; conducts compensation and market reviews and provides recommendations related to departmental reorganizations and internal equity.
  • Manages the Competency-Based Job Description process for University Hospital to ensure compliance with Joint Commission requirements, including oversight of the job description library to ensure all approved position descriptions are current, accurate, and grammatically correct.
  • Ensures appropriate salary surveys and market studies are conducted to evaluate and validate University Hospital’s compensation programs and pay practices.
  • Oversees the implementation of negotiated union wage programs, including timelines, supporting documentation, and coordination with Human Resources, Payroll, and hospital leadership; participates in the development and execution of non-union compensation programs.
  • Supervises compensation staff responsible for the day-to-day administration of compensation programs, including hiring, performance management, discipline, professional development, and other personnel actions.
  • Assists the Chief Negotiator during collective bargaining by compiling and analyzing compensation data, evaluating union proposals, developing goals and strategies, drafting proposals and counter-proposals, and tracking tentative agreements and outstanding negotiation issues.
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience serving as an Administrator Compensation or in an equivalent compensation-focused role, including a minimum of two (2) years with direct responsibility for compensation administration and labor relations.
  • Proficiency skill level in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of database applications such as Microsoft Access.
  • Experience with Oracle Compensation or comparable enterprise compensation systems
  • Experience in a unionized healthcare, public-sector, or academic medical center environment.
  • Familiarity with compensation benchmarking, salary surveys, and market analysis.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the proven ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organization.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the Salary for this position is $ 94,582 - $ 141,873.
