The Information Security & Identity Management division manages the University’s Information Security Office and Identity Management. The Security Office is responsible for coordinating and ensuring that information security across the University is consistent with industry best practices and the University’s compliance obligations. Identity Management (IdM) identifies individuals within an enterprise or group and defines and controls the access they have to information and resources within a computer network based on their roles and circumstances.
This position is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Information Security Office (ISO) coordinates the University’s cybersecurity program. ISO operates critical common controls, evaluates security performance and proposed changes to the program, and works continuously to improve the institution’s response to cyber risk. ISO reports on program effectiveness and direction to the Chancellor, Provost, and Board of Trustees.
Within ISO, the Analysis, Architecture, and Communications (AAC) team is responsible for the Coordination of Security program the institutional framework through which security accountability and execution is distributed across University units. The team conducts the analysis required for major security initiatives, particularly those with significant policy, business process, or architectural components, driving that analysis to conclusions and producing recommendations that inform CISO decision-making and institutional action. Domain experts inside and outside ISO are engaged as needed to complete this work. The team provides security architecture analysis and guidance for initiatives with significant institutional, policy, or cross-unit dimensions, and partners with the Security DevOps team to plan the technical implementation of major initiatives, transitioning ownership to DevOps for execution. The team also leads communications from ISO to campus to Departmental Security Administrators (DSAs), University leadership, and the broader institutional community oversees the University’s security training program, and produces the program-level analysis and Key Performance Indicators that support CISO reporting to the Chancellor, Provost, and Board of Trustees.
The Manager of AAC directs the Coordination of Security program, including managing the DSA relationship network across a large, decentralized research university. This role leads complex, cross-functional analysis on security initiatives that span technology, policy, and business process, driving that analysis to actionable conclusions. The AAC Manager translates security requirements into communications and frameworks that non-security audiences can understand and act on, and provides or directly oversees security architecture analysis and guidance for initiatives with significant institutional, policy, or cross-unit dimensions, partnering with the Security DevOps team to plan technical implementation. The manager builds, manages, and develops a team operating across analysis, architecture, and communications functions. The role delivers executive-level reporting and board-level materials in partnership with the CISO. The manager sets priorities for the team independently, makes sound judgments under ambiguity, and escalates to the CISO when decisions exceed delegated authority.
Masters’ and 2-4 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 3-5 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Experience Seven or more years of experience in roles requiring enterprise-level analysis, program management, or policy development in a large, complex organization. At least three years managing or leading teams. Experience working across organizational boundaries engaging multiple stakeholders with competing priorities is required.
