Job Description

The Manager is responsible and accountable for assisting the director with coordinating and directing day‑to‑day activities in units, ensuring adequate staffing and delivery of quality, cost‑effective care. The manager fulfills RN job requirements for home units, serves as a clinical resource person, and role model for staff members. He/She continually assesses staff educational needs and identifies areas for improvement.

Responsibilities

• Technical tasks: plans and arranges department/unit meetings; patient rounds; timely and complete documentation related to personnel files.
• Critical thinking: directs staff in daily operations—including problem identification, planning, implementation, patient safety, and evaluation of patient outcomes.
• Facilitates daily Care Coordination Rounds and ensures development of Plans of Care that meet individualized patient needs.
• Interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels, and disciplines personnel assigned to the unit and/or department.
• Determines number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care, establishing activity/guidelines for the unit/department.
• Examines patient care delivery, identifies problems and improvement needs, including patient safety.
• Proposes educational programs to hospital employees, medical staff, and community.
• Participates in the budgetary process by monitoring unit expenditures and revenue.
• Oversees orientation of new employees and develops competencies specific to the unit/department.
• Ensures regulatory compliance of the unit/department with all agencies, licensing boards, and laws.
• Contributes to development and revision of policies, procedures, and practice standards for the unit.
• Addresses customer satisfaction issues with patients, physicians, and staff promptly.
• Reviews customer satisfaction reports and suggests improvements.
• Initiates action to meet personal objectives.
• Functions as a team member and participates in unit council meetings and workgroups.
• Other duties as assigned: coordinates activities with other departments for patient needs; acknowledges patient and family values and acts as a role model for staff.
