Job description

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care in the designated areas of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration and participates in committees, representing the unit and nursing in a positive manner. The manager assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction and demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking.

The manager responsibility includes managing the daily work activities of the unit staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. The manager provides guidance to staff, handles staffing, budget compliance, hiring and termination, coaching and counseling employees, and assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. Additional responsibilities include implementing training, monitoring and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices, accreditation, regulatory and government regulations.

Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing
Experience
  • Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare; for internal candidates, two years’ experience in nursing which includes proven leadership abilities such as charge nurse responsibilities.
Licenses and Certifications
Required
  • RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure, Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days of establishing Texas residency.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC) within 1 year.
Preferred
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) as required by department.
  • NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) as required by department.
  • NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) as required by department.

  • Monitor compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards; take action upon non-compliance.

  • Implement strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs, optimizing productivity and resource efficiency.
