Overview

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care in the designated areas of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration and participates in committees, representing the unit and Nursing in a positive manner. The position assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction. It demonstrates leadership qualities, critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, effective interpersonal skills, and strong oral/written communication.

Responsibilities

The manager position responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of the work unit/department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. It provides guidance to staff and is responsible for staffing, budget compliance, contributing to staffing decisions (such as hiring and terminating employment), coaching and counseling employees on work-related performance, and assisting in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. It also implements training, monitoring and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing

Experience
• Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare; for HM internal, two years’ experience in nursing which includes HM performance that demonstrates leadership abilities, i.e. charge nurse responsibilities

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
  • Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC)

Preferred

  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) As required by department
  • NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) As required by department
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) As required by department

Essential Functions
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of department staff. Provides development and mentoring of staff. Meets or exceeds threshold goal for department turnover. Develops direct reports to perform these same functions.
  • Provides fair and consistent leadership and communication to maintain a competent and engaged employee group; conducts regular department meetings, rounds on all employees, completes performance appraisals, conducts new hire feedback sessions, coaching/corrective counseling, and recognition/commendations to achieve desired outcomes. Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen knowledge and skills.
  • Facilitates and promotes effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies; participates in and/or leads department process improvements as needed.
  • Meets or exceeds threshold goals for department and/or system metrics on employee engagement indicators: action readiness score, tier level.
  • Establishes effective two-way communication with staff, demonstrates active listening, seeks and acknowledges feedback, and supports organizational goals. Coaches staff to use efficient and effective communication to maintain a team environment, including patient and family as part of the plan of care. Assists staff with stress management practices.
Service Essential Functions
  • Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, scheduling and activities. Sets priorities and standards, giving direction to staff to ensure high-quality service and customer/patient satisfaction.
  • Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer satisfaction scores; serves on entity committees as a department representative.
  • Serves as a role model to staff, reinforcing service orientation and focusing on improving patient care; resolves concerns, complaints or conflicts with patients, families, physicians and other interprofessional team members, following appropriate procedures.
  • Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff on ways to improve patient care and service.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
  • Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and revises the department safety plan and applicable safety guidelines, including infection control principles. Verifies staff credentials per accrediting agency or department guidelines.
  • Uses information systems to enhance operations and supports performance improvement and data management/analysis functions.
  • Optimizes safe outcomes by monitoring and improving department workflow; promotes accountability and reports near misses/adverse events; supports lean process improvements.
  • Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and System HR Standards of Practice; takes appropriate actions for non-compliance.
  • Prepares measurable goals aligned with Houston Methodist priorities and develops action plans, with collaborative efforts when appropriate.
Finance Essential Functions
  • Assists in budget development and ensures cost-effective operation. Manages department expenses within approved parameters and meets budget targets monthly and annually. Develops staffing plans to meet care needs with cost-awareness.
  • Implements strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs by optimizing productivity and resource efficiency; minimizes incidental overtime where possible.
  • Plans coverage of unit to maximize management presence; develops staffing plans accordingly.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
  • Identifies and implements innovative solutions to improve department operations; leads unit projects and shared governance activities. Supports change initiatives and adapts to new structures, processes, or cultures.
  • Evaluates processes, recommends action plans, and ensures sustainable change; contributes to new procedures and revisions of existing ones.
  • Identifies opportunities to build strategic relationships across areas to achieve business goals.
  • Supports development of staff; conducts career development discussions and maintains IDPs.
